Dynamic processes in narcissism and affect across Chinese and American individuals
594, observations = 26,802) and an existing American data set (N = 862, observations = 36,631) to investigate the dynamics of narcissism and affect in daily life. Using dynamic structural equation modeling, we characterized these dynamics through key indicators-mean, variability, contemporaneous correlations, autoregressive effects, and cross-lagged effects-and examined their intercorrelations and associations with dispositional variables. Result…
Self-efficacy predicts differential neuroticism change in a smartphone-based intervention.
25.88; 85% female; Residence: 47% Switzerland, 26% Germany, 26% Austria, 1% other), we tested whether self-efficacy and growth mindset predict change in multiple neuroticism measures across a 6-week intervention and 2-month follow-up. To isolate temporal processes during the intervention, we examined codevelopment of weekly neuroticism and self-efficacy and their week-to-week temporal associations. We found evidence for self-efficacy predicting d…
A Latent Structural Comparison Between the Circumplex Scales of Interpersonal Problems (CSIP) and the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP-C)
This study investigates differences in measuring interpersonal problems using two established instruments: the Circumplex Scales of Interpersonal Problems (CSIP) and the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP-C). We developed a German translation of the CSIP and compared it to the German IIP-C in a community sample representative of the German general population regarding age and gender (NT1 = 677, NT2 = 514). To compare the two instruments, we…
Validation of the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology Brief Report (HiTOP-BR) in Two German-Speaking Samples
601). Confirmatory factor analyses and exploratory factor analyses with target rotation supported the hypothesized six-factor structure across both samples, although observed cross-loadings suggested scope for item refinement. Scalar measurement invariance was established between the clinical and nonclinical samples. Scale scores showed acceptable to good reliability (ω = .77-.88). Convergent and discriminant validity were examined via correlatio…
Intuitive Judgments of Strangers Are More Popular but Not More Accurate Than Deliberate Ones
Popular advice in media and self-help literature encourages people to trust their intuition when forming impressions of strangers. We tested this widespread lay belief by examining whether intuitive judgments are preferred over deliberate ones and whether such preferences are justified by differences in accuracy. In Study 1 ( n = 401), participants from the general population reported using intuition more frequently, preferring it, and expressing…

Does physical and social neighborhood environment matter for two-year changes in functional abilities and cognitive function in the oldest old
Objectives While favorable physical neighborhood environments have been shown to benefit functional abilities (FA) and cognitive function (CF) in older adults, evidence on social aspects remains inconclusive. This study aimed to examine the role of both physical (quality, infrastructure, walkability) and social (place attachment, social cohesion) neighborhood characteristics for levels/changes in FA and CF among the oldest old, who were often und…
Challenges in Research on the Oldest Old
The general relevance of health in old age is in stark contrast to the low number of population-based surveys that include the oldest old. The exclusion of older people with health impairments from population-based surveys has consequences for evidence on health inequalities among the oldest old. This article aims (1) to analyse socioeconomic inequalities in functional health in the oldest old, and (2) to discuss methodological challenges related…
The role of individual and environmental socio-economic resources for cognitive change in very old age
Our findings suggest that individual socio-economic resources continue to be associated with better cognitive function in very old age, but are unrelated to short-term cognitive decline. In addition, there is some evidence for associations of baseline cognitive function and cognitive change with environmental factors over and above individual resources. Implications for future research are discussed
Evaluating the Psychometric Properties of the German Self and Interpersonal Functioning Scale (Sifs)
The Self and Interpersonal Functioning Scale (SIFS) is a 24-item self-report questionnaire assessing personality functioning according to the alternative DSM-5 model for personality disorders. We evaluated the German SIFS version in a total sample of 886 participants from Germany and Switzerland. Its factor structure was investigated with confirmatory factor analysis comparing bifactor models with two specific factors (self- and interpersonal fun…
Go with your gut! The beneficial mood effects of intuitive decisions
People make countless decisions every day. We explored the self-regulatory function of decisions and assumed that the very act of making a decision in everyday life enhances people's mood. We expected that this decision-related mood change would be more pronounced for intuitive decisions than for analytical ones. The ease of making a decision and the feeling of rightness were expected to mediate the effect of intuitive (vs. analytical) decisions …
Exploring the Latent Structure and Convergent and Incremental Validity of the Metacognition Assessment Scale – Abbreviated in a Sample of Patients with Non-Affective Psychosis
Synthetic metacognition is a heterogeneous construct related to psychotic disorders. One important tool to assess this construct is the Metacognition Assessment Scale - Abbreviated (MAS-A). In this study, we investigated the latent structure as well as the interrater reliability and convergent and incremental validity of the MAS-A in a sample of patients with non-affective psychosis. Analyses indicated that the scale might be one-dimensional. Int…
A Critical Evaluation of the Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (RFQ)
The Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (RFQ) is an 8-item self-report measure of reflective functioning that is presumed to capture individual differences in hypo- and hypermentalizing. Despite its broad acceptance by the field, we argue that the validity of the measure is not well-established. The current research elaborates on problems of the RFQ related to its item content, scoring procedure, dimensionality, and associations with psychopatho…
Assessing Personality Change
Both clinical and personality psychologists are interested in assessing personality change, although they have tended to approach the issue in different ways. In this paper we argue that both sub-fields should focus more on basic issues in the assessment of personality change, and that they would make more progress on this issue together than alone. This Special Section on the Assessment of Personality Change includes four papers by researchers w…
Assessing Maladaptive Personality in the Forensic Context
The current study proposes an adaptation of the PID-5 to assesses maladaptive personal traits in forensic settings. Specifically, we adapted the item set of the PID-5 Faceted Brief Form (PID-5-FBF) to the forensic context and validated the resulting PID-5 Forensic Faceted Brief Form (PID-5-FFBF) using self- and informant-reports of 199 male prisoners. Exploratory factor analyses suggested a four-factor solution comprising Antagonism, Detachment, …
A Bifactor Model of Personality Organization
The aim of this study was to explore the viability of a bifactor model for the Inventory of Personality Organization (IPO), which is a self-report measure of personality functioning based on Kernberg’s model of personality organization. A heterogeneous, predominantly clinical sample (N = 616) completed the German 83-item version of the IPO. Confirmatory and Exploratory Factor Analyses were applied to explore the factor structure of the IPO. We we…
Evaluation of a short version of the Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised questionnaire (ECR-RD8)
The ECR-RD8 appears to be a reliable, valid, and economic questionnaire for assessing attachment insecurity. In addition, the reported population-based norm values will help to contextualize future research findings
Realness is a core feature of authenticity
We established realness as the relatively stable tendency to act on the outside the way one feels on the inside, without regard for proximal personal or social consequences. In nine studies, we showed that realness is a) a core feature of individual differences in authenticity, b) generally adaptive but largely unrelated to agreeableness, c) highly stable, d) reliably observable in dyadic behavior, and e) predictive of responses to situations wit…

The policy relevance of personality traits
Personality traits are powerful predictors of outcomes in the domains of education, work, relationships, health, and well-being. The recognized importance of personality traits has raised questions about their policy relevance, that is, their potential to inform policy actions designed to improve human welfare. Traditionally, the use of personality traits in applied settings has been predicated on their ability to predict valued outcomes, typical…

The Effect of Dislike on Accuracy and Bias in Person Perception
The present work explores how accuracy and bias in person perception change with the level of liking that the perceiver holds toward the target person. Specifically, we studied whether dislike affects (a) the social desirability of judgments (positivity bias), (b) the extent to which the target is described like an average person (normative accuracy), and (c) the extent to which the judgment reflects the given target’s characteristics in particul…
Differential associations of knowing and liking with accuracy and positivity bias in person perception
A great range of person perception phenomena may be conceptualized in terms of how much perceivers know about the targets, how much they like the targets, and how these factors relate to the extent to which target descriptions reflect actual target characteristics and/or evaluative bias. We present a comprehensive empirical analysis of this interplay in two studies, the second (targets: N = 189, informants: N = 1352) being a preregistered replica…

A model of “substance” and “evaluation” in person judgments
For decades, person perception research has grappled with the distinction between the targets’ actual characteristics (“substance”) and how positively or negatively those characteristics are viewed by perceivers (“evaluation”); however, lack of an overarching theoretical framework makes it difficult to establish connections between related lines of research. We review the relevant literature, and present and test an algebraic model that incorpora…

Listening Communities? Some Remarks on the Construction of Religious Authority in Islamic Podcasts
In the context of the vivid activity of Muslim individuals and groups on the Internet and the recent technological developments in the field of computer mediated communication, podcasts offering a wide range of religious information and/or advice to Muslim (and non-Muslim) listeners play an increasingly important role. Being an integral part of the Web 2.0's online landscape and presenting, at the same time, many characteristics of more "traditio…

“Are We Talking About the Same Person Here?”
We investigated how interrater agreement in personality judgment is affected by the perceivers’ affection or dislike regarding the targets. A total of 209 perceivers judged the personalities of 15 targets by means of 30 adjectives. The targets were public figures (e.g., the Pope), which enabled gathering a large number of ratings by perceivers differing in liking. Shared liking was associated with strong increases, and large liking differences we…

Outcome trajectories and mediation in psychotherapeutic treatments of major depression
Trajectories and mediators of change were investigated in a process-outcome study. Patients were allocated at random to psychoanalytic therapy (PA) or psychodynamic therapy (PD), and later to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Measurement points were at pre-treatment, during ongoing treatment, at post-treatment, and during a three-year follow-up. Outcome trajectories were assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI; Hautzinger et al. 1994)…
Zwei Mal »Lehren«? Ein Widerspruch zu Wolfgang Reinbolds Auslegung von Mt 28,19
Wolfgang Reinbold's interpretation of Mt 28:19 which uses the translation »teach« instead of »make disciples of«, not only fails because of the context, but can also be strongly objected to in light of its linguistic arguments. This article illuminates further special aspects of the use of μαητιενειν in this context and for the understanding of »mission«.
