  • Artefacts of national subversion

  • Class, Conflict, and Power between Hegemony and Critical Knowledge

    Ana Dević•ARTICLE•Communist and Post-Communist…•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 9

This article opens by situating the Yugoslav academic perspectives on class and politics within the framework of recent studies dealing with class in post-socialist Europe. It then presents the ways in which the first Yugoslav dissidents understood the “new class” (the embourgeoisement of the party elite), followed by a review of a large number of studies on the disintegration of workers’ self-management project, students’ protests, and workers’ …

  • Paradoxes of Gender Politics

    Ana Dević•ARTICLE•Nationalism and Ethnic Politics•2021•Cited by: 4

The article maps the positioning of women in the right-wing nationalist politics in Serbia, as well as the place of gender (equality) in the programs of these right-wing and other political parties. The grand frame of all right-wing groupings in Serbia is three-fold: (1) the collapse of the Yugoslav state and socialist regime; (2) the ethnonationalist frames of extreme wartime violence, which conditioned the Serbian postsocialist “transition”; an…

  • Ottomanism and Neo-Ottomanism in the Travails of the 'Serbian National Corpus

    Ana Dević•ARTICLE•Die Welt des Islams•2016•Cited by: 1

This study addresses the revival of 'Ottomanism', defined as a threat of 'return' to the cultural and political norms of the Ottoman Empire, operationalized via the links between Turkey and the local Muslim population, among the academic elites in Serbia since the late 1980s. The making of Ottomanism a relevant segment of the nation-building process in post-Yugoslav Serbia has served two goals: (1) forgetting the history of the Yugoslav Federatio…

  • Transnationalization of Civil Society in Kosovo

    Ana Dević•ARTICLE•Ethnopolitics•2006•Cited by: 6•References: 8

This paper examines the main features of the non-governmental sector in Kosovo engaged in peace building and multi-ethnic coexistence. It seeks to answer the question why this Western-designed civil society sector, well integrated in the flows of the transnational aid industry, has not so far developed significant leverage against the dominant ethno-nationalist politics in Kosovo. It argues that the main problem of this civil society segment—its …

  • Anti-War Initiatives and the Un-Making of Civic Identities in the Former Yugoslav Republics

    Open Access•Ana Dević•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Sociology•1997•Cited by: 10

This paper describes the emergence of anti-war initiatives in the former Yugoslavia against the background of the official nationalism of Communist elites and their post-1990 successors. The author argues that anti-war activism in the disintegrating state was a mobilization of the most articulate segment of a widespread, all-Yugoslav, urban, cosmopolitan and genuinely non-ethnonationalistic cultural identity. One of the reasons behind its easy su…
