Gift or Weapon? Reproductive Decision, the Phenomenology of Pregnancy, and Alien Language in Denis Villeneuve's Arrival
This essay analyzes Denis Villeneuve's 2016 film, Arrival, and elucidates its strikingly original meditation on the ethics of reproduction and the relationships between and among embodied maternal subjectivity, language, and temporality. Drawing on deconstructive theories of language and relationality as well as on the writing of scholars working at the intersection of reproductive biology and feminist philosophy, the essay argues that Arrival us…
Love and Narrative Form in Toni Morrison’s Later Novels. Jean Wyatt
In Love and Narrative Form in Toni Morrison’s Later Novels, Jean Wyatt argues that Beloved (1987) marks a “revolution” in Morrison’s style (7). Morrison’s post-Beloved novels are structurally and stylistically innovative, Wyatt claims, and this innovation is intertwined with an evolving and improvisatory discourse on love: love as regressive, love as rogue, love as impossible, love as too soon, love as too late. In a striking and metaleptic insta…
Maternal Love/Maternal Violence

These examples turn on a fascination with subjectivity on the threshold of being and language. But they also locate their psychoanalytic and developmental struggles in the context of slavery's violent impositions and exclusions. Morrison's work returns repeatedly to scenes of traumatic separation …
Postapocalyptic Responsibility
Cormac McCarthy's 2006 novel, The Road, depicts a decidedly masculine subject contemplating a death that is simultaneously imagined as, and as taking place at, the end of the world. As such, the novel invites its dismissal as an extravagantly solipsistic elegy for patriarchy. But despite the narrative's symptomatic displacement of the protagonist's wife (the mother of his child), and notwithstanding its desperate idealization of the father-child …
The University in Crisis
Nobody tells me anything. And I sit there . . . in the corner. In the back. And everybody’s talking about “this” all the time. And “concepts,” and “precepts” and, and, and, and, and WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? And I read your book. And they said, “Fine, go in that class.” Because you talked about responsibility to the young. I DON’T KNOW WHAT IT MEANS AND I’M FAILING. David Mamet, Oleanna
