Gender inequality in the Nordic film industry: Exploring above-the-line positions in film production
In this article, we explore the enduring barriers to gender equality in the Nordic film industry, with a focus on positions of power and structural biases. Despite considerable efforts over the past decades to highlight gender inequality – resulting in more women in creative positions in Sweden, Denmark, and Finland – a significant gap remains. Our analysis of 1,070 films produced and released theatrically between 2010 and 2020 in Denmark, Finlan…
Spotlight on Film Festivals in Ukraine Today: Accounts, Responses, Calls to Action
This roundtable begins with each festival organizer explaining how the outbreak of the current war in Ukraine affected the planning and organizing of their respective film festivals. The film festival sector and its networked structures of gender inequality
The global film industry is shaped by gender inequality. Women are structurally underrepresented in professional roles that include high levels of creative and economic decision-making power, such as directors, writers, and producers. To address this question, we conceptualize the festival sector as a one-mod…
Gendered Production Culture in the German Film Industry

The lack of female talent in the industry, thus, can't be a problem of quality as is often argued. Instead, industry structures fail …

Rêves transversaux. La circulation des films queer dans le réseau des festivals
Crossover Dreams: Global Circulation of Queer Film on the Film Festival Circuits
The ubiquity of gender-bending and sexually ambiguous imagery in the media seems to herald a post-gay era. But are LGBT/Q identities and representation politics really a thing of the past? Inspection of the circulation patterns of LGBT/Q images on a global scale suggests a more nuanced story. Taking the lead from distribution and film festival studies, in this essay I sketch out how LGBT/Q images travel around the world. The festival network was …
