Math anxiety mediates the association between gender and STEM-related attitudes: Evidence from a large-scale study
Math anxiety (MA) is a prevalent academic anxiety that can affect student mental health and academic performance worldwide. Using a very large sample of students in grades 7 to 10 (N = 7172) in Qatar, the present study examined the associations among gender, math anxiety, and attitudes towards Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). In addition, the factorial structure of the "Student Attitudes towards STEM Survey" (STEM-S) was …

Evaluating self-reported psychopathy and associations with personality traits outside the Werid countries: Evidence from two Arabic speaking Middle Eastern countries
The prevalence, manifestation and assessment of psychopathy might be influenced by culture. However, the vast majority of research on psychopathy has been carried out in a few Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich and Democratic (WEIRD) countries. In contrast, there is limited knowledge in the Middle Eastern Arabic speaking countries for psychopathy. A large sample of under-graduate university students (N = 850) from two Arab countries (Egypt a…
The mitigating role of physical activities on emotions is gender-specific: An experience during “lenient” Covid-19 prevention protocols
The researchers examined emotional status subsequent to changes in physical (PA) and sedentary (SA) activities during "lenient" COVID-19 prevention protocols that allowed being outdoors. Emotions, PA, and SA were collected from 272 women and 145 men in Qatar. The researchers showed a decrease ( p p p p p < 0.05) in men. The "mitigating" role of PA for the adverse emotional effects of the pandemic is demonstrated, especially among men. Therefore, …
The Covid-19-Related Lockdown in Qatar: Associations Among Demographics, Social Distancing, Mood Changes, and Quality of Life
The worldwide spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the absence of medical treatment and vaccination, the delayed onset of symptoms, and the rapid human-to-human transmission have led the vast majority of countries to impose strict social distancing procedures. Whereas it appears that social distancing is an effective strategy for mitigating spread, it may also result in a variety of unintended negative consequences to individuals' psycho…
Testing Measurement Invariance of the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (Panas) in American and Arab University Students
The psychometric properties of an Arabic version of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) across three Arabic-speaking Middle Eastern countries
The nature and extent of the influence of culture on psychopathology have long been studied, with a central emphasis on whether abnormal behavior is etic (universalized) or emic (cultural based). This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties (factorial structure, inter-correlations, reliability, and criterion validity) of an Arabic translation of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 across three Arabic-speaking countries (Bahrain, Kuwait…
The Robustness of the Nine-Factor Structure of the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire across Four Arabic-Speaking Middle Eastern Countries
The Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) focuses on the "pure" cognitive components of emotion regulation thought to help people to manage and control their emotions during or after the experience of a stressful event. The aim of this study was to explore the psychometric properties of an Arabic version of the CERQ (CERQ-Ar) across four Arabic-speaking countries in the Middle East (i.e., Egypt, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qa…
Self-reported psychopathy in the Middle East: A cross-national comparison across Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United States
These findings lend preliminary support to the construct validity of self-reported psychopathy in Arabic-speaking cultures, providing provisional evidence for the cross-cultural generalizability of certain core characteristics of psychopathy
Identification accuracy for single‐ and double‐perpetrator crimes: Does accomplice gender matter
There is an important mismatch between empirical research on the accuracy of eyewitness identification and the real world of criminal investigation. Most research models single‐perpetrator crimes, but in the real world, most crimes involve multiple perpetrators. This study examined how the number of perpetrators affects eyewitness identification by manipulating the gender of accomplices. Observers viewed a video of a staged crime. The crime was c…
A cross-cultural investigation of identity statuses in Middle Eastern countries
The psychosocial theory of Erikson suggests that identity formation requires resolving a series of conflicts, and therefore ego strengths are related to the success or failure of resolving each conflict. Based on this theory, Marcia (1966) established an identity status paradigm (ISP), which consisted of four statuses: achievement, moratorium, foreclosure and diffusion. Exploration (the active consideration of alternatives) and commitment (the at…
