  • Applications of Anthropology

Open Access•Adam Drazin, Maia Green et al.•BOOK•Applications of Anthropology•2022•Cited by: 2

At the beginning of the twenty-first century the demand for anthropological approaches, understandings and methodologies outside academic departments is shifting and changing. Through a series of fascinating case studies of anthropologists’ experiences of working with very diverse organizations in the private and public sector this volume examines existing and historical debates about applied anthropology. It explores the relationship between the…

    Open Access•Jon Henderson, C Breen et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 66

The Rising from the Depths (RftD) network aims to identify the ways in which Marine Cultural Heritage (MCH) can contribute to the sustainable development of coastal communities in Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and Madagascar. Although the coastal and marine heritage of eastern Africa is a valuable cultural and environmental resource, it remains largely unstudied and undervalued and is subject to significant threat from natural and anthropogenic pro…

  • Disciplined Affections

    Garry Marvin•CHAPTER•Animals in Person•2020

This chapter explores the nature and structure of the relationships that allow the huntsman to shape the behaviours of scores of individual animals into a harmonious unity as a free-ranging but disciplined collectivity, the pack, such that they can perform their task of hunting foxes across the countryside. In the context of animal-keeping in England, foxhounds constitute an unusual group. The chapter touches on only some aspects of the practice …

No obsta…

  • The Responsible Dog Owner

Open Access•Carri Westgarth, Robert Christley et al.•ARTICLE•Anthrozoös•2019•Cited by: 7•References: 22

Policy and campaigning messages related to dog ownership and welfare center on the concept of responsible ownership. However, the perspectives and experiences of pet owners and how they perceive and perform their responsibilities has not been studied in depth. This qualitative study used conversations about owning and walking dogs in order to elucidate beliefs and views about responsibility in dog ownership. Data comprised 12 in-depth interviews …

  • An interdisciplinary review of current and future approaches to improving human–predator relations

Open Access•Siân Pooley, Merry Barua et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Biology•2017

In a world of shrinking habitats and increasing competition for natural resources, potentially dangerous predators bring the challenges of coexisting with wildlife sharply into focus. Through interdisciplinary collaboration among authors trained in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, we reviewed current approaches to mitigating adverse human–predator encounters and devised a vision for future approaches to understanding and mit…

  • I Walk My Dog Because It Makes Me Happy

Open Access•Carri Westgarth, Robert Christley et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

Dog walking is a popular everyday physical activity. Dog owners are generally more active than non-owners, but some rarely walk with their dog. The strength of the dog-owner relationship is known to be correlated with dog walking, and this qualitative study investigates why. Twenty-six interviews were combined with autoethnography of dog walking experiences. Dog walking was constructed as "for the dog", however, owners represented their dog's nee…

  • L'animal de zoo

    Open Access•Garry Marvin•ARTICLE•Techniques & culture•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 9

  • English Foxhunting

    Garry Marvin•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2007•Cited by: 11•References: 5

In 2005 foxhunting was prohibited by an act of parliament in England. The Hunting Act 2004 forbade the highly formal and ritualized hunting of foxes with packs of hounds and thus brought to an end a practice that had been present in the countryside for some 200 years. In this article I explore the complexities of foxhunting as a social and cultural practice prior to the ban as well as the nature of the ban as it relates to killing foxes. I would …

    Garry Marvin•ARTICLE•Society and Animals•2001•Cited by: 10•References: 2

This article concerns the related ideas of "presentation" and "representation" with regard to animals and suggests that the prefix "re" indicates a directing agent with its own concerns about the nature and status of animal presence. It further suggests that the representation of animals is perhaps always an expression of human concerns, desires, and imaginings. As with other domesticated nonhuman animals, foxhounds are not present in the world t…

The analysis of events such as sports, hunting for pleasure, games, circuses and celebrations which involve competition between animals, between humans and animals or petformances with animals reveals much about how people view relations between the natural and cultural worlds, between wild and tame or domesticated, the similarities and differences between humans and animals and between different categories of human beings (for example gender dif…
