  • Response to uncertainty in developmental origins of health and disease research

Open Access•Yoko Nomura, Jeffrey H Newcorn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2024

We appreciate the comments of Gilman et al. They, however, raised concerns about some of the results regarding specific types of psychiatric disorders and sex‐specific results related to the prenatal Superstorm Sandy hurricane exposure. We comment on the various issues related to the paper below but will not respond to comments regarding the press coverage of this article, which we think are beyond the scope of this commentary

  • Prenatal exposure to a natural disaster and early development of psychiatric disorders during the preschool years

Open Access•Yoko Nomura, Jeffrey H Newcorn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2023

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence shows an association between in utero exposure to natural disasters and child behavioral problems, but we still know little about the development of specific psychopathology in preschool-aged children. METHODS: Preschool children (n = 163, mean age = 3.19, 85.5% racial and ethnic minorities) and their parents (n = 151) were evaluated annually at ages 2-5 to assess the emergence of psychopathology using the Preschool A…

  • Associations Among Maternal Metabolic Conditions, Cord Serum Leptin Levels, and Autistic Symptoms in Children

Open Access•Toshiki Iwabuchi, Nagahide Takahashi et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

The present study uncovered an association between cord leptin levels and autistic symptoms in children, while maternal metabolic conditions did not have an evident direct influence on the outcome. These results imply that prenatal pro-inflammatory environments affected by maternal metabolic conditions may contribute to the development of autistic symptoms in children. The findings warrant further investigation into the role of leptin in the deve…

  • Trajectories of Adaptive Behaviors During Childhood in Females and Males in the General Population

Open Access•Tomoko Nishimura, Takeo Kato et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Little is known about the trajectory patterns and sex differences in adaptive behaviors in the general population. We examined the trajectory classes of adaptive behaviors using a representative sample and examined whether the class structure and trajectory patterns differed between females and males. We further explored sex differences in neurodevelopmental traits in each latent class. Participants ( n = 994) were children in the Hamamatsu Birth…

  • Influence of in utero exposure to maternal depression and natural disaster‐related stress on infant temperament at 6 months

Open Access•Yoko Nomura, Kei Davey et al.•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 43

This study examined the effects of in utero exposure to maternal depression and Superstorm Sandy, a hurricane that hit metropolitan New York in 2012, on infant temperament at 6 months. Temperament was assessed using the Infant Behavior Questionnaire‐Revised. Maternal depression was measured by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. The main effects and the interaction of maternal depression and Sandy exposure on infant temperament were examine…

  • Prenatal Depression and Infant Temperament

Open Access•Wei Zhang, Jackie Finik et al.•ARTICLE•Infancy•2018

Prior research has demonstrated the link between maternal depression during pregnancy (i.e., prenatal depression) and increased neurodevelopmental dysregulation in offspring. However, little is known about the roles of key hypothalamic–pituitary axis regulatory genes in the placenta modulating this association. This study will examine whether placental gene expression levels of 11 β ‐hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 ( HSD 11 B 2 ), glucocortic…

  • Infant Temperament

    Open Access•Jessica L Buthmann, Jacob Ham et al.•ARTICLE•Child Psychiatry & Human…•2018

  • Substance use and functional impairment among adolescents directly exposed to the 2001 World Trade Center attacks

    Open Access•Claude M Chemtob, Yoko Nomura et al.•ARTICLE•Disasters•2009•Cited by: 7•References: 24

The relationship between exposure to the World Trade Center (WTC) attacks, increased substance use, functional impairment and mental health service use, controlling for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, was assessed through an in-school survey of directly exposed students (N = 1040) attending the five middle and five high schools nearest the WTC. The survey was conducted 18 months after the attacks. Students with one WTC exposure ris…

  • Offspring of Depressed Parents

Myrna M Weissman, Priya Wickramaratne et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Psychiatry•2006

OBJECTIVE: This study was a 20-year follow-up of offspring of depressed and nondepressed parents to determine the magnitude and continuity of the risk of parental depression to the offspring. METHOD: The authors followed 151 offspring of moderately to severely depressed parents or nonpsychiatrically ill comparison subjects for about 20 years, to a mean age of 35 years. Four interviews and diagnostic assessments from childhood or adolescence to ad…
