Exploring Differences in Financial Literacy Across Countries
How to Use Economic Theory to Improve Estimators
We propose to use economic theories to construct shrinkage estimators that perform well when the theories' empirical implications are approximately correct but perform no worse than unrestricted estimators when the theories' implications do not hold. We implement this construction in various settings, including labor demand and wage inequality, and estimation of consumer demand. We provide asymptotic and finite sample characterizations of the beh…
Private Wealth Across European Countries
Using microdata from the Household Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS), this study examines the role of inheritance, income and welfare state policies in explaining differences in household net wealth within and between euro area countries. First, about one third of the households in the 13 European countries we study report having received an inheritance, and these households have considerably higher net wealth than those which did not inherit…

The impact of housing non-cash income on the household income distribution in Austria
We estimate non-cash income from owner-occupied housing, subsidised rental housing, and free use of the main residence, and evaluate their impact on the household income distribution and selected inequality measures. We use a novel data set that provides inter-subjective information on housing quality, thus eschewing selection problems. We confirm the standard finding in the literature that imputed rents accruing to home owners have an equalising…

Gender and Educational Attainment Across Generations in Austria
In many societies, children' educational attainment is heavily dependent on their parents' education; but that result can differ by the gender of both the parents and the child. Using a Markovian approach, along with uni- and multivariate econometric techniques, this study employs the Austrian Household Survey on Housing Wealth to show strong persistence in educational attainment that differs according to the gender of the parent and child. In Au…
