  • License to Broker

Open Access•Everett Yuehong Zhang, Brandy L Aven et al.•ARTICLE•Administrative Science Quarterly•2024

Brokerage in intra-organizational networks is critical to performance, but women exhibit less brokerage in their social networks and receive lower performance returns to the brokerage they exhibit than men do. We uncover a condition under which the gender gaps in network advantage are entirely negated: mobility. When women move between units of the organization, they increase their brokerage more than mobile men do. Further, such mobility elimina…

  • Social Distance and Knowledge Transformation

    Open Access•Brandy L Aven, Everett Yuehong Zhang•ARTICLE•Sociological Science•2016•References: 5

Organizations are increasingly adopting technologies to promote knowledge sharing across boundaries of specialized groups. Yet, prior research beginning with March (1991) suggests that such knowledge-sharing technologies actually inhibit organizational learning by reducing solution diversity. This line of reasoning stems from the prior literature’s assumption that the knowledge shared will be transferred from one member to another perfectly and w…

  • The birth of nanke (men's medicine) in China

    Open Access•Everett Yuehong Zhang•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•2007•Cited by: 15•References: 21

Why have hospital visits by impotence patients increased and visits by yijing (spermatorrhea) patients decreased in China since the 1980s? A change in moral symptomatology explains these diverging trends: Yijing, as a symptom under Maoist socialism, reflected a moral code of hostility toward individual desire, whereas impotence, as a symptom in post-Mao China, reflects the justification of individual desire. This contrast reveals a shift in the b…

  • Switching between Traditional Chinese Medicine and Viagra

    Everett Yuehong Zhang•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology•2007•Cited by: 12•References: 23

Based on the fieldwork in China in the Viagra era, this paper examines the reluctance to embrace Viagra as well as the willingness to switch back and forth between taking Viagra and taking Chinese medicine among impotence patients. Through the notion of "switching" as a framework, this paper discovers the conflict between Viagra and herbs not only as two types of medicine but also as representing two types of economy of potency and ethics of sexu…

  • Rethinking Sexual Repression in Maoist China

    Open Access•Everett Yuehong Zhang•ARTICLE•Body & Society•2005•Cited by: 19•References: 14

Through an example of the prohibition against dating in a technical school in southwest China in 1978, this article analyzes how three intersecting forces - the ideology of socialist collectivism, the structure of the work unit system and the socialist sovereign ownership of the body - account for sexual repression in the Maoist period in China. Rather than being an ahistorical, essential component of Maoist socialism, sexual repression (psychic …

  • Goudui and the State

    Open Access•Everett Yuehong Zhang•CHAPTER•Gendered Modernities•2001

I was talking to Li Wendong, CEO of a large private enterprise in a southern province of China, one afternoon in the summer of 1995.2 He was in his mid-30s and claimed to own assets worth over U.S. $250 million. He was talking resolutely about what he planned to invest in during the coming years. He had become one of the wealthiest persons in his province and seemed to know no limit to the potential of his investment and his ambition. I asked him…
