Differentiating Falsely Recognized Faces from Incompletely Remembered Faces
This study describes an experimental method for determining whether people who recognize a face containing both some target features and some new features are falsely recognizing the face or whether they are incompletely remembering it. Twenty min. after studying a target face either one time or a third time, 136 participants were instructed to examine six test faces similar to the target and to select two test faces sharing only target features …
Contextualizing images in dreams and daydreams
A contextualizing image (CI) is a powerful central image of a dream which appears to “contextualize” (provide a picture-context for) the dreamer's emotion. For instance, dreamers who have experienced any serious traumatic event sometimes dream, “I was overwhelmed by a tidal wave.” This appears to picture their feeling of terror and/or vulnerability
Bizarreness of the dreams and daydreams reported by individuals with thin and thick boundaries
Apperception revisited
Personality and Immunity
The present smdy focuses on the sntistical association between depression and immune deficiency. In explaining this association, Schwartz (1983) maintains that depression stems from repression and that repression disrupts the neuroimmune system. In contrast, Becker (1973) argues that the depressive person does not repress feelings of meaninglessness, and Simonton, Matthews-Simonton, and Creighton (1978) argue that the desire not to live a meaning…
Repressed Fear of Inexistence and its Hypnotic Recovery in Religious Students
When college students were hypnotized and instructed to rate their “subconscious” fears of death, they expressed greater fear, of inexistence than when they were awake. At the same time, hypnotized students expressed no greater fear of death-related possibilities other than the possibility of inexistence. The hypnotically elicited fear of inexistence was marginally associated with a stronger belief in an afterlife and was significantly associated…
Hypnotizability
The present study examined the correlations among three variables: hypnotizability scores, hours of daydreaming per day, and hours of sleep per night. Previously, Hilgard (1974) and Wilson and Barber (1980) found that greater hypnotizability is associated with daydreaming more frequently and more vividly. Hilgard concluded that daydreaming is a trance-like stare similar to hypnosis irself. Wilson and BarbeP concluded that daydreams and hypnotic e…
Better Liars Have Better Imaginations
The present study examined the relationship between the abiliry to image visually and the ability to avoid lie-detection. Previously, Kubis' and More (3) found that instructing subjects to image during a lie-detection test enhanced their ability to avoid detection. Neither measured the imaging abilities of their subjects. More recently, in a biofeedback study not concerned with lie-detection, Ikedn and Hirai (1) found that better imagers have bet…
