I’m Ready This Time: Investigating physiological and emotional habituation to repetitive social stress
BACKGROUND: Repetitive stress is at the nexus of acute and chronic stress, and there is limited knowledge about how physiological and emotional responses change with repeated exposure. PURPOSE: We examined stress-related biomarkers and emotional responses to repeated social stressors, and we tested behavioral moderators. METHODS: In Study 1, 42 adults completed the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) twice, 4 months apart. Serum inflammatory cytokine…
Nathan Meyer-Rothschild’s Reproduction of Business Masculinity in the Portrait A View from the Royal Exchange. A Historical, Bourdieusian and Visual Semiotic Exploration
Business Masculinity represents a distinctly English configuration of masculinity that was hegemonic in the City of London’s banking and finance industry until recently. This work uses visual semiotic analysis, historical analysis and Bourdieusian concepts to show how Rothschild reproduced the aesthetics of Business Masculinity in the portrait A View from the Royal Exchange (1817) by using clothing and other symbolic cultural capital. To secure h…
Aging together: Dyadic profiles of older couples' marital quality, psychological well-being, and physical health
The current study examined couple-level profiles to reveal systematic patterns of health and well-being in older couples. Using latent profile analysis, dyadic profiles were constructed in a national sample of 535 older, different-sex couples based on couples' marital quality, psychological well-being, and physical health. Results revealed 4 distinct profiles: Maritally Satisfied and Healthy (63.5%), Maritally Dissatisfied and Moderately Healthy …
The days add up: Daily marital discord and depressive reactivity linked to past-month depressed mood and marital risk across 10 years
Marital discord fuels depression, according to decades of research. Most prior studies in this area have focused on macro-longitudinal change in depression over the course of years, and on global ratings of marital satisfaction. Less work has examined fluctuations in depressed mood and marital discord in daily life, and none has investigated associations of short-term patterns with longer-term depressed mood and marital outcomes. Using data from …

Do They Really Work? Quantifying Fabric Mask Effectiveness to Improve Public Health Messaging
The purpose of this study is to compare masks (non-medical/fabric, surgical, and N95 respirators) on filtration efficiency, differential pressure, and leakage with the goal of providing evidence to improve public health messaging. Masks were tested on an anthropometric face filtration mount, comparing both sealed and unsealed. Overall, surgical and N95 respirators provided significantly higher filtration efficiency (FE) and differential pressure …
Couples' day-to-day pain concordance and marital interaction quality
Chronic pain is a common stressor in couples' daily lives, but little is known about couples' day-to-day pain concordance (i.e., agreement regarding one partner's level of pain) and its relevance to both partners' daily marital interaction quality. Using 22-day diaries of patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis (OA) and their spouses, the current study sought to quantify the degree of daily fluctuation in both partners' reports of patient pai…
Medication supply chain management through implementation of a hospital pharmacy computerized inventory program in Haiti
BACKGROUND: In the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, St. Luke Hospital was built to help manage the mass casualties and subsequent cholera epidemic. A major problem faced by the hospital system was the lack of an available and sustainable supply of medications. Long-term viability of the hospital system depended largely on developing an uninterrupted medication supply chain. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that the implementation of a new Pha…

P2-331 Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and aspirin use and the risk of head and neck cancer: A systematic review
Introduction Use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has been associated with a reduced risk of several cancers. We conducted a systematic literature review to investigate the association between NSAID/aspirin use and risk of head and neck cancer (HNC). Method Medline, Embase, PubMed, Cochrane Library and Web of Science were systematically searched using terms for NSAIDs/aspirin, HNC and observational/intervention study designs. Res…
O4-4.1 Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and aspirin use and the risk of head and neck cancer
Introduction The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) has been associated with a reduced risk of several cancers. Evidence for NSAIDs preventing head and neck cancer (HNC) is inconclusive. We conducted a prospective cohort study to examine the association between NSAID use and HNC risk. Methods Using data from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial, we examined the…
Community discourse about politics in Northern Ireland
Political and parliamentary discourse analysis is a well-established field of research. Such work focuses on the patterns and processes of political discourse and their relation to wider issues and ideologies. In this article, we aim to further understanding of sociopolitical processes by shifting the focus from parliamentary to community discourse about political life. With reference to data from post-devolution Northern Ireland, we examine how …

What Happened to the "Long Civic Generation"? Explaining Cohort Differences in Volunteerism
In Bowling Alone Robert Putnam argues that the passing of the “long civic generation” whose values were molded by the Depression and the Second World War, has resulted in a decline in civic engagement. In this analysis we test the generation hypothesis by comparing the volunteer behavior of two successive generations of women at the same age. No support for Putnam's thesis is found. Once appropriate controls for sociodemographic trends are impose…

A possible Late Pleistocene echo of world linguistic and cultural accordance
A comparison of words in the Akarimojong and Gaelic languages reveals a large number of similar words with related meanings. Not only are there many isolated words in common between the two languages, but also there are many themetic words related to cultural activities such as construction of dwellings, animal husbandry, cultivation, food processing and personal adornment. Extension of the research reveals the existence of Akarimojong words with…

The ratio of 2nd to 4th digit length: A predictor of sperm numbers and concentrations of testosterone, luteinizing hormone and oestrogen
The differentiation of the urinogenital system and the appendicular skeleton in vertebrates is under the control of Hox genes. The common control of digit and gonad differentiation raises the possibility that patterns of digit formation may relate to spermatogenesis and hormonal concentrations. This work was concerned with the ratio between the length of the 2nd and 4th digit (2D:4D) in humans. We showed that (i) 2D:4D in right and left hands has…

HIV and Aids: Unexpected lessons for Save the Children
HIV and AIDS training is a sensitive area in which experience is all recent. Previous articles in Children & Society (issues 1. 1, 1.2 and 2.4) have looked at major concerns for children's services. This paper reports on an imaginative approach to staff training in one child care agency — Save the Children Fund. The authors' frankness about problems as well as benefits will help others to identify lessons for their organisations., particularly fo…
Mortality ratios, life expectancy, and causes of death in patients with Turner's syndrome
In a prospective study of 156 female patients with Turner's syndrome who had survived infancy and been followed up for an average of 17 years there were 15 deaths. The expected mortality was 3.6. Sixteen of the patients had a congenital heart anomaly and five of the deaths occurred in this group. The 10 deaths in the remaining 140 were three times as many as expected. The reduction in life expectation was 12.5 years at age 1 year, 11 years at age…

Causes of death in X chromatin positive males (Klinefelter's syndrome)
The causes of death in 466 X chromatin positive males (Klinefelter's syndrome) studied prospectively over the last 25 years have been analysed. We have previously reported the overall mortality to be increased by 50% and life expectancy reduced by about five years. A highly significant increase in mortality from cerebrovascular disease was observed in the sub group considered to be most representative of X chromatin positive males in general. In …
