“Local Heroes”: Construction firms pioneering circular innovation
Innovation in the construction sector is critical to reducing environmental impacts, yet the adoption of circular innovations remains poorly understood. This paper examines the determinants of circular innovation adoption among 376 construction firms in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, based on an original survey dataset. Our analysis reveals that R&D investments increase the likelihood of circular innovation adoption by 24 percentage points, …
Modelling green knowledge production and environmental policies with semiparametric panel data regression models
This paper introduces a novel semiparametric econometric framework for policy evaluation and estimates a green knowledge production function for a large, 30-year panel dataset of high-income countries. Due to the substantial uncertainty in the data-generating process and the potential presence of nonlinearities and latent common factors, the paper explores semiparametric panel specifications that go beyond interactive fixed effects fully parametr…
The Role of Voluntary Environmental Policies Towards Achieving Circularity
Over the last decade, waste management and prevention have become important in the transition towards a circular economy (CE). This study explores how voluntary environmental policies, adopted at a regional level, contribute to green transition from the perspective of the CE. By considering general and region-specific trends in waste management and environmental certifications, we perform a two-step analysis on a panel of 20 Italian regions betwe…
The ‘Good Farmer’ concept and the diffusion of innovations in rural Africa
Endogenous agricultural development is needed to improve food productivity and address the socioeconomic and environmental challenges facing Africa in the near future. Considering the failure of past top-down development policies, the integral development of Africa’s agricultural sector, requires tailoring technological and technical improvements to the local rural realities while respecting their cultural identities and social norms. This paper …
Waste recycling and yardstick competition among Italian provinces after the EU Waste Framework Directive
Recycling and the recovery of waste are crucial waste management strategies. In light of the new European Union (EU) circular economy approach, these strategies remain core pillars of a competitive and sustainable waste value chain. Local governments have an important role in controlling and checking the implementation of waste management policies. We study the spatial determinants of waste recovery using a dataset of 102 Italian provinces from 2…

Towards a green economy through innovations: The role of trade union involvement
In this paper, we address the overlooked issue of whether and how industrial relations might play a role in the process of greening the economy, primarily through the levers of innovation adoption and organisational change. We address our objective econometrically, assessing the quality of industrial relations as a driver of environmental innovation adoption, through the use of micro-data on manufacturing firms. The results yield two interesting …
