  • Between drought and flood

    Open Access•Joyeuse Iragena, Alejandro López-Feldman et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2026

Africa emits roughly 4% of global greenhouse gases yet faces some of the world’s most damaging climate extremes. Using approximately 45,000$ face to face interviews from Afrobarometer Round 9 (2021–2023) across 37 countries, we examine how perceived increases in drought and flood severity relate to climate change awareness, risk perceptions, policy support, and evaluations of institutional effort. We estimate selection corrected probit and ordere…

  • Students’ non-cognitive skills in times of crisis

Open Access•Tonatiuh Cruz Herrera, Manuel Lara González et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences & Humanities Open•2023

The COVID-19 pandemic caused serious disruptions in the school systems throughout the world. In this work we look at the effect that the pandemic had in non-cognitive skills of students in Mexico. Few studies have looked at this relationship and the studies available have looked at the effects on children in high-income countries. Our results show that growth mindset declined, while social awareness and self-management improved during the pandemi…

    Open Access•Alejandro López-Feldman, Roberto Porro•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2021

This paper contributes to the literature by testing the effect of a household's relative position on its subjective well‐being. Our results show that both self‐perceived status and relative income have significant effects on the subjective well‐being of households located in the Peruvian Amazon. The paper also considers negative random shocks and shows that non‐agricultural shocks have a negative effect on subjective well‐being. These results imp…

  • Does Migration Make Rural Households More Productive? Evidence from Mexico

J Edward Taylor, Alejandro López-Feldman•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2010

The migration of labour out of rural areas and the flow of remittances from migrants to rural households are an increasingly important feature of less developed countries. This paper explores ways in which migration influences incomes and productivity of land and human capital in rural households over time, using new household survey data from Mexico. Our findings suggest that a massive increase in migration to the United States increased per-cap…
