Climate policy feasibility across Europe relies on the conditional middle
New estimates of the elasticity of marginal utility of consumption for Europe
We estimate the elasticity of marginal utility of consumption ( $$\mu $$ μ ) for Europe and 32 individual European countries using household-level income tax data. Specifically, we rely on the absolute equal-sacrifice approach to elicit the revealed preferences of income taxpayers on their political preference for income redistribution. Our central estimate of $$\mu $$ μ equals 1.43. With few exceptions, $$\mu $$ μ ’s for European countries excee…
Profiling cannabis consumption motivation and situations as casual leisure: Evidence from German consumers
Elasticity of marginal utility of consumption: The equal-sacrifice approach applied for the Czech Republic
We provide the first estimate of the elasticity of marginal utility of consumption, $$\mu$$ μ , for a post-transition economy in the Central & Eastern European region – the Czech Republic – based on household-level data. Using the absolute equal-sacrifice income tax approach, we obtain a central estimate of $$\mu$$ μ at 1.47, which varies between 1.32 to 1.66 within the study period covering 2005–2022. Moreover, the estimate of the elasticity of …
Exploring Motivations for Cannabis Use in Casual Leisure: A German Perspective
Cannabis is a popular leisure activity in many cultures, especially in North America and Europe, where it is commonly used for socializing and entertainment. A recent German study employed the Marijuana Motives Measure to survey young adults, analyzing four motivational factors in the context of casual leisure. The research aimed to understand the reasons behind adults’ daily cannabis use, its link to consumption frequency, and situations. The fi…
All Cancers Are not Created Equal: How Do Survival Prospects Affect the Willingness to Pay to Avoid Cancer
Regulatory impact analyses of proposed environmental, occupational, and consumer product safety regulations often rely on a metric known as the Value per Statistical Case of Cancer (VSCC), that is, the public’s willingness to pay (WTP) for reductions in the risk of developing cancer. In this paper, we ask whether the VSCC depends on cancer survival prospects. We develop a simple theoretical model that shows that under standard assumptions the VSC…
The influence of urban greenspaces on people’s physical activity: A population-based study in Spain
Explaining inequalities in fruit and vegetable intake in Europe: The role of capabilities, opportunities and motivations
Incentivizing Commuter Cycling by Financial and Non-Financial Rewards
Current mobility patterns over-rely on transport modes that do not benefit sustainable and healthy lifestyles. To explore the potential for active mobility, we conducted a randomized experiment aimed at increasing regular commuter cycling in cities. In designing the experiment, we teamed up with developers of the "Cyclers" smartphone app to improve the effectiveness of the app by evaluating financial and non-financial motivational features. Parti…
How to Achieve a Healthier and More Sustainable Europe by 2040 According to the Public? Results of a Five-Country Questionnaire Survey
The aim of this paper is to understand public preferences for several future scenarios of achieving a healthier, more equitable and sustainable Europe, which differ in the way the society is organized (individualistically vs. collectively) and in the driving sector (public vs. private). To achieve this aim, we conducted a questionnaire survey using representative samples for five European countries in 2018. About three thousand respondents chose …
Ten Lessons for Good Practice for the Inherit Triple Win: Health, Equity, and Environmental Sustainability
The world's challenges of climate change, damage to ecosystems, and social and health inequalities require changes in human behaviours at every level of organisation, among governments, business, communities, and individuals. An important question is how behaviour change can be enabled and supported at the scale and speed required. The research reported in this paper describes important lessons for good practice in changing contexts to modify beh…
Preferences for Energy Efficiency vs. Renewables: What Is the Willingness to Pay to Reduce CO2 Emissions
The Inherit Model: A Tool to Jointly Improve Health, Environmental Sustainability and Health Equity through Behavior and Lifestyle Change
The need for analysis and action across the interrelated domains of human behaviors and lifestyles, environmental sustainability, health and inequality is increasingly apparent. Currently, these areas are often not considered in conjunction when developing policies or interventions, introducing the potential for suboptimal or conflicting outcomes. The INHERIT model has been developed within the EU-funded project INHERIT as a tool to guide thinkin…
Environmental Impact of Consumption by Czech Households: Hybrid Input–Output Analysis Linked to Household Consumption Data
Exploring heterogeneity in the value of a statistical life: Cause of death v. risk perceptions
Eaere-2012: International Scientific Conference of Environmental and Resource Economists in Prague
The 19th Annual Conference of European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists, EAERE-2012, was held in Prague at the end of June 2012. Leading environmental economists discussed new research outcomes and economic theory extensions related to economics of climate change, efficient pollution reduction, optimal use of natural resources, nonmarket valuation and green economy
Environmental Regulation Impacts on the Czech Power System by the Dynamic Linear Optimisation Model Message
The paper analyses impacts of environmental regulation on Czech power system. We employ MESSAGE modelling platform to construct a dynamic linear optimisation energy model of the Czech power system. We analyse regulation impacts on fuel use and CO2 emission, fuel-mix and technology-mix, induced investment and fuel and other O&M costs to generate electricity over the period 2006-2030. Negative external costs attributable to endogenously determined …
Valuation of Mortality Risk Attributable to Climate Change: Investigating the Effect of Survey Administration Modes on a VSL
The health impact attributable to climate change has been identified as one of the priority areas for impact assessment. The main goal of this paper is to estimate the monetary value of one key health effect, which is premature mortality. Specifically, our goal is to derive the value of a statistical life from people's willingness to pay for avoiding the risk of dying in one post-transition country in Europe, i.e., the Czech Republic. We carried …
What Motivates Czech Consumers to Buy Organic Food
The objective of this paper is twofold. First, the authors aim to analyse the factors that affect the intention of Czech consumers to purchase organic food using the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). Second, they employ an extended TPB model that introduces descriptive norms as an additional actor of behavioural intention. This study exploits data from a consumer survey of a sample of the Czech general adult population (N = 252) conducted in 201…
Study on benefit transfer in an international setting. How to improve welfare estimates in the case of the countries' income heterogeneity
The Valuation of Risks in the Labor Market: Hedonic Wage Study in CR
This study investigates the relationship between wages and risks of work-related fatalities in the Czech labour market. To prove this relationship, we followed the theory of compensating wage differentials and the theory of hedonic prices. Using data from 2007 Czech labour survey, we econometrically derived three hedonic wage functions. To estimate mortality risks premiums, two of hedonic wage functions used objective measures of fatality risk, o…
