Virtual forests and human well-being
Beyond the “Big 5”
Purpose Seafood consumption can support sustainable dietary transitions by reducing reliance on other animal proteins and boosting local food production. Despite UK health advice to “eat two portions of fish per week, including one oily fish”, UK seafood consumption remains low and focuses on mostly imported “Big 5” species (salmon, cod, haddock, tuna and prawns), overlooking many locally caught small oily species (e.g. mackerel, herring and pilc…
‘You shall not pass!’—frequent hikers' acceptance of access restrictions in overcrowded Italian Mountains
Outdoor recreation is reported to have many positive effects on individuals and communities. However, when recreationists' presence becomes overcrowding, it can cause ecological damage to natural sites while also reducing the benefits of outdoor recreation for recreationists and local communities. Restriction measures are an option to reduce overcrowding. First, we evaluated the acceptance and preference of restriction measures to protect the env…

The monetization of soil
This Viewpoint proposes assigning explicit economic value to soil—not merely as a platform for infrastructure but as a finite, three-dimensional resource crucial to food production and ecosystem services provision. Unlike water or air, soil is rarely accounted for its fundamental environmental importance. To fill this gap, we advocate a Total Economic Value framework spanning use, option and non-use benefits, which, contrary to conventional land …
Using the life satisfaction approach to economically value the health and wellbeing benefits of forest and green space visits in Italy
The importance of rebuilding trust in fisheries governance in post-Brexit England
The sustainable management of common pool resources, like fisheries, relies heavily on trust and reciprocity between managers and stakeholders (fishers). The UK Fisheries Act of 2020 and the Joint Fisheries Statement of 2022 seek to reinvent post-Brexit fisheries governance and the economic and environmental sustainability of the sector. Management of the fisheries sector through Fisheries Management Plans (FMPs) is still under development but ch…
Demographics and wildlife value orientations
Wildlife value orientations affect how people connect with animals. Traditionalists primarily consider wildlife as a source of sustenance. Societal values, however, are shifting toward mutualism, which sees wildlife as deserving of rights and care. This article examined factors that influence wildlife value orientations of tourists (n = 420) in an Alpine region in Italy, where human-wildlife conflicts are common. The questionnaire included 14 wil…
Determinants of agricultural diversification
Diversification of farm activities is one of the strategies to reduce the risk associated to the farm business and stabilise farmers’ income, in particular for smaller farms. Diversification may result in on-farm activities (e.g. agritourism) or off-farm, which indicates that farmers seek additional income in the labour or investment market off their farms. Understanding the determinants of diversification is important to anticipate farms that ar…
Marine ecosystem services of seagrass in physical and monetary terms
Seagrass habitats are essential and vulnerable ecosystems with several key roles, from biodiversity hotspots to climate change mitigation. Their characteristics, current condition and potential benefits, are the main core of this study which presents one of the first applications of marine accounts for the European Mediterranean Sea. The assessment focuses on four marine and coastal ecosystem services (i.e. fish and raw biomass provision, blue ca…
Seaweed aquaculture through the lens of gender
Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food-producing sectors worldwide. Of particular importance is the cultivation of seaweed, particularly in East and Southeast Asia where seaweeds dominate the production market, and are key for coastal communities both as main livelihood source and as alternative or supplementary income to fisheries. Women play a crucial role in various segments of the seaweed aquaculture value chain; yet few researchers h…
Application of stated-preferences methods and neuroscience for the valuation of dynamicity in forest cultural ecosystem services
In this study, we combined virtual reality and electroencephalogram (EEG) methods in a lab setting to evaluate the restorative effects of forests on the mental state. In doing so, we compared forests in different vegetative seasons, varying types of forest stands, and forest densities. Twenty participants were exposed to videos of forests with different tree species compositions and cover densities across two seasons. At the same time, participan…
Discrete choice modeling in environmental and energy decision-making
This editorial introduces the Special Issue on the role and use of discrete choice modelling in informing environmental and energy decision making and summarises the main insights provided. The papers collected in this Special Issue address a range of applications of discrete choice modelling, from energy decisions to climate change and transport choices, from tourism preferences for climate change mitigation to wildlife conservation strategies a…
The role of choice experiments in natural capital accounting approaches
Natural capital accounting requires exchange rather than welfare values, but lack of data and standards have encouraged practitioners to use different approaches (e.g. simple lookup table vs spatial modeling approaches). In this paper, we demonstrate how choice modeling data can provide simulated exchange values which are more robust than simple (fast track) valuation approaches for natural capital accounting. A survey of East of England resident…
Assessing tourists’ preferences for conservation of large carnivores in the Italian Alps using a discrete choice experiment
A study on tourists’ preferences for wildlife conservation in the Italian Alps using a choice experiment is presented. The study focuses on wolves, lynx and salamanders, which are in danger of extinction. Welfare analysis suggests that WTP for varying sizes of animal population increases up to 45–55 animals and then decreases. This indicates that tourists are willing to financially contribute to an increase in the number of animals, but they do n…
Knowledge and awareness of water quality protection issues within local authorities
The EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) outlines an integrated framework for water management. The major objective of the WFD is that member states should achieve at least good ecological status of all national waters. This ambitious target can only be achieved with efficient water management governance because water quality is complex and sources of pollution are manifold. Within countries, multiple institutions are responsible for water manageme…
Could a mix of short- and long-term policies be the solution to tackle marine litter? Insights from a choice experiment in England and Ireland
Valuing nature-based recreation in forest areas in Italy
Nature-based recreation provides benefits facilitating social interactions and cohesion, creating job opportunities, and stimulating the local economy. The aim of this study was to assess the recreational economic value of different forest areas considering two aspects: stand features and proximity of the forest to urban areas. An individual Travel Cost Method (TCM) was applied in three study areas in Italy involving 603 visitors in the survey. T…

Trade-offs between physical risk and economic reward affect fishers’ vulnerability to changing storminess
Climate change-driven alterations in storm frequency and intensity threaten the wellbeing of billions of people who depend on fisheries for food security and livelihoods. Weather conditions shape vulnerability to both loss of life and reduced fishing opportunities through their influence on fishers' daily participation decisions. The trade-off between physical risk at sea and the economic rewards of continued fishing under adverse weather conditi…

Why do preferences for electricity services differ? Domestic appliance curtailment contracts in Ireland
Empirical evidence across several electricity markets reveals heterogeneous customer preferences for direct load control and other electricity service offerings but relatively little is understood concerning the drivers of this preference heterogeneity. Using a discrete choice experiment examining the potential role of domestic appliance curtailment contracts as a means of shifting load, this paper investigates potential drivers of preference het…

The role of emotions on tourists’ willingness to pay for the Alpine landscape
Previous research suggests that landscape preferences vary systematically amongst people. While various sources of heterogeneity have been considered in landscape preference literature, the role of emotions on willingness to pay for landscape features has never been examined. This article presents results of a choice experiment carried out for eliciting tourists’ for Alpine landscapes. The emotional state of respondents was used to model heteroge…
