Scheduling self-efficacy surpasses motivational constructs in explaining physical activity adherence in non-Hispanic Black men
Non-Hispanic Black (NHB) men engage in less aerobic physical activity (PA) and are less likely to meet national guidelines than non-Hispanic White men, despite PA's protective benefits against chronic disease. This study examined psychosocial factors associated with meeting PA guidelines among NHB men. A total of 134 participants ( M = 36.7 years, SD = 9.8) were recruited via social media and completed validated measures of motivation, psychologi…
Accelerometer-Measured Physical Activity and Cardiometabolic Risk Factors by Race-Ethnicity
Compendium of Physical Activities
PURPOSE: The Compendium of Physical Activities was developed to enhance the comparability of results across studies using self-report physical activity (PA) and is used to quantify the energy cost of a wide variety of PA. We provide the second update of the Compendium, called the 2011 Compendium. METHODS: The 2011 Compendium retains the previous coding scheme to identify the major category headings and specific PA by their rate of energy expendit…
Walking and Cycling to Health
Objectives. We sought to determine the magnitude, direction, and statistical significance of the relationship between active travel and rates of physical activity, obesity, and diabetes. Methods. We examined aggregate cross-sectional health and travel data for 14 countries, all 50 US states, and 47 of the 50 largest US cities through graphical, correlation, and bivariate regression analysis on the country, state, and city levels. Results. At all …
Walking, Cycling, and Obesity Rates in Europe, North America, and Australia
Purpose: This study was designed to examine the relationship between active transportation (defined as the percentage of trips taken by walking, bicycling, and public transit) and obesity rates (BMI ≥ 30 kg · m −2 ) in different countries. Methods: National surveys of travel behavior and health indicators in Europe, North America, and Australia were used in this study; the surveys were conducted in 1994 to 2006. In some cases raw data were obtain…

Skeletal muscle fibre type and capillary density in college-aged blacks and whites
The purpose of this study was to compare muscle fibre type proportions and capillary density in untrained, college-aged blacks (n = 14) and whites (n = 14). Both groups were similar in terms of peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak), measured during cycle ergometry (blacks: 42.6 +/- 4, whites: 44.3 +/- 4 ml.kg-1 min-1, mean +/- SD). Muscle samples were obtained from the quadriceps femoris (vastus lateralis) by the needle biopsy technique. Fibre type was de…
Cardiovascular and plasma catecholamine response to static exercise in normotensive blacks and whites
The enhanced vascular sensitivity to norepinephrine may have contributed to the greater exercise pressor response in the blacks
