Hierarchical Bayesian Prediction Methods in Election Politics
The authors build a collection of latent construct models, one per voter, in a representative sample of the voting age population. A given voter's model is an algebraic expression of how that person integrates information about candidates and issues to arrive at a vote decision. Modeling individual decisions—called agent-based modeling—avoids aggregation fallacies and yields diagnostic insights unavailable from traditional pre-election polling me…
Utility and Choice
Results of an experiment manipulating the effects of cognitive conflict, role dominance, and persuasive messages on husband-wife decisions show that couples tend to choose options that are equitable and centered in their negotiation set, a tendency that is prevalent over choice occasions and bargaining conditions. Two mechanisms that support equity—static cooperation and dynamic shifts in individual utility functions—are interpreted in light of t…

Sampling Distributions for Scores On the Role Construct Repertory Test
Sampling distributions are obtained for scores on the grid form of the Role Construct Repertory Test (Rep Test) using a null hypothe sis of random behavior. Three different scoring rules are considered; the method of tied-ratings based on 6-point scales (Bieri et al., 1966), the method of tied-ratings based on 2-point scales (Scott, 1962) and Fiedler's most preferred person score (Fiedler, 1967). In all three cases the mean and variance of the sa…
Some Statistical Considerations In Clustering With Binary Data
A statistical theory of cluster homogeneity is developed for object:, scored on binary (0,l) variables. The theory utilizes two test statistics originally suggested by Tryon and Bailey (1970). The exact sampling distribution of the statistic H2,,, "squared homogeneity for cluster g on variable r" is derived under the assumption of a random assortment of 0's and 1's in the observed clusters. Formulas for the mean and variance of H,2, "the overall …
