Hope as an Act of Repair
I recently returned from Venice, where late-autumn fog softens the edges of buildings and light thins into a quiet, silvery wash. The city’s fragile beauty, its slow, ongoing struggle with rising w
From “bystander to witness”
Numerous veterans have observed that one does not heal from war, but rather one learns to surrender to the complicated losses that wartime experiences bring. Veterans have pushed back against stereotyped images of themselves as heroes, victims, or perpetrators. Many have challenged the implications of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a diagnosis, as well as the effectiveness of evidence-based treatment procedures for PTSD. Work emerging fr…
A Day at the Zoo Through the Lens of Jessica Benjamin's Bonds of Love
In this photo-based essay I bring Jessica Benjamin's project of transforming relationships of domination to a day at the zoo. I'm in the Milk and the Milk Is in Me Writing from the Night Kitchen
Although psychoanalysts have used psychoanalytic concepts to understand issues of writer's block as it affects the work of artists and writers, we have largely neglected the process of psychoanalytic writing per se. The author's personal relationship between self, text, and community is used as an initial contribution to the development of clinically near imaginative theory as well as to facilitate the generative authorship of others. The difficu…
Female sexuality
A Barrenness or Body and Theory
This essay tracks the vicissitudes of woman's analysis during her three year attempt to become pregnant, and in her own words, “to become a real mother”. As a lesbian daughter of heterosexual parents, she attempted to “cure” her infertility, and redress her self- perceived sexual sins through compliance with a fantasy of heterosexual completion. This fantasy came to be seen as a diversion from the more difficult task of re-engaging with a symboli…
