"Memory Effects" and Dark Histories
Ecologists' concept of "memory effects" considers how past environments shape current and future ones. Drawing on ethnographic research and historical scholarship, this essay uses their concept to ask what scientists remember and what they forget, and to expand ecologists' definition of the environment. The author argues that contemporary ecological light-pollution research in greater Berlin can take place because of the site's longer naturalcult…

Knowledge and the politics of land
In this special issue, the authors provide in-depth historical and contemporary studies to examine how land is known and the ways in which land management and expertise are produced, disseminated, experienced and contested. The papers analyze the production of models, frameworks, calculations, tools, and ideas that shape land use and access to resources. These empirical and conceptual insights are particularly critical today as declarations of cr…
An Envirotechnical Disaster
This essay uses literatures and concepts from environmental history, the history of technology, and disaster studies to analyze what took place at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station on March 11, 2011, and all that has transpired in the months since. In particular, it considers Charles Perrow's “normal accidents” and Thomas Parke Hughes's “technological systems,” emphasizing the contributions and limits of these frameworks. It then uses the n…

The article develops the concepts of hydroimperialism and hydrocapitalism both historically and analytically. It examines some of th…

The Modernist Enterprise
Although The Modernist Enterprise can be appreciated by scholars in a variety of fields, it is situated squarely within French history and cultural studies: Marjorie Beale writes that this is "an empirical study of the cultural practice of modernity" in Paris between 1900 and 1940 (p. 4). She examines the ways in which French elites began to "rethink the relationship between culture, commerce, and government," arguing that they hoped to discover …
