On the relation between age and the importance attached to historical events
The critical years hypothesis is an influential hypothesis in the social sciences. According to this hypothesis, events occurring during adolescence or young adulthood are most important. This hypothesis is significant because if generations do indeed differ from each other because they were socialized in different contexts, the succession of generations has the potential to change societies. In this study, we test the validity of the critical ye…
On the causal relationship between participation in national commemorations and feelings of national belonging
It is often theoretically argued that participation in national commemorations increases feelings of national belonging. Previous studies have also empirically demonstrated that participation in national commemorations and feelings of national belonging are positively related. We are uncertain, however, about the direction of this relationship. Does participating in national commemorations increase feelings of national belonging (increase hypothe…
Does Participation in National Commemorations Increase National Attachment? A Study of Dutch Liberation Festivals
It is generally assumed that national commemorations have the power to increase national attachment. This is because such ceremonies highlight shared history, communicate core values, and have the potential to decrease conflicts in societies, while celebrating and mourning together enhances attachment to the group. Remarkably, only a limited number of studies have empirically studied the relation between participation in national commemorations a…
Explaining age differences in positive attitudes towards national commemorations
Commemorations of shared national history are important to the process of nation‐building. Support for such national commemorations is not, however, evenly distributed in societies. Because this could endanger the possible integrative function of commemorative ceremonies, it is important to understand the sources of structural differences in support. In this article, age differences in support for national commemorations in the Netherlands are ex…
Financial Consequences of Relationship Dissolution
The aim of this article is twofold. First, we examine whether there are differences between ex-cohabiting and former married men and women in their income change after relationship dissolution. Second, we focus on differences between divorced and ex-cohabiting men and women in coping with the changed income situation after relationship dissolution. We look at two coping strategies: increasing one's labor-market participation and finding a new par…
Religiosity as a Moderator of the Relationship Between Authoritarianism and Social Dominance Orientation
In this study, the author examines the association between authoritarianism, social dominance orientation (SDO), and religiosity. She tested these associations in three sociopolitical contexts (i.e., Italy, Finland, and Estonia) based on representative samples. In all three countries, religious people were found to be more authoritarian and less socially dominant. Dallago, Cima, Roccato, Ricolfi, and Mirisola (2008) showed that religiosity decrea…
The relevance of class in shaping authoritarian attitudes
Left-wing authoritarianism is not a myth, but a worrisome reality. Evidence from 13 Eastern European countries
A sometimes heated debate between authoritarianism researchers takes place on the issue of authoritarianism on the left. Some researchers argue that authoritarianism is typical for right-wing political orientation while other researchers assert that authoritarianism can also be found at the left side of the political spectrum. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we aim to contribute to the ongoing discussion on left-wing authoritarianism. Us…
