  • Statens pensjonsfond utland og samfunnskontrakten

    K C Myhre, Henrik Syse•ARTICLE•Nytt Norsk Tidsskrift•2024

  • What Should We Hope For? In Search of Reasonable Definitions of Success

    Open Access•Henrik Syse•ARTICLE•The Review of Faith & International…•2024•References: 1

The criterion of “reasonable likelihood of success” clearly depends on a reasonable definition of success. This article suggests three such definitions and discusses these in light of the great uncertainty that accompanies any use of this forward-looking just war criterion. The importance of thorough understanding and knowledge, both military and cultural, in order for the application of the reasonable likelihood criterion to be meaningful is als…

  • Threats and Coercive Diplomacy

    Open Access•Gregory M Reichberg, Henrik Syse•ARTICLE•Ethics & International Affairs•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Threats of armed force are frequently employed in international affairs, yet they have received little ethical scrutiny in their own right. This article addresses that deficit by examining how threats, taken as a speech act, require a moral assessment that is distinctive vis-à-vis the actual use of armed force. This is done first by classifying threats within the framework of speech act theory. Then, applying standard just war criteria, we analyz…

  • The Dignity in Free Speech

Odin Lysaker, Henrik Syse•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Human Rights•2016

It is difficult to strike a balance between protecting freedom of speech and ensuring public safety. The attacks on 22 July 2011 in Norway, and the fear of terrorist acts inspired by public utterances on the Internet, have caused many to question whether and how we should regulate hate speech. In this article, we analyse the main arguments from the debate on freedom of speech in post-terror Norway, termed the ‘liberal’ and ‘harm’ (or ‘balance of …

  • Humanitarian Intervention

    Open Access•Gregory Reichberg, Gregory M Reichberg et al.•ARTICLE•Security Dialogue•2002•Cited by: 2•References: 4

The distinction between offensive and defensive force is central to modern international law. As developed in the interwar years and later codified in the United Nations Charter, international law has strictly banned resort to offensive force, the only possible exception being operations mandated by the Security Council. In the just war tradition (JWT), by contrast, some kinds of offensive force are permitted, including humanitarian interventions…

  • Protecting the Natural Environment in Wartime

    Open Access•Gregory Reichberg, Gregory M Reichberg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Research•2000•Cited by: 3•References: 8

Environmental destruction in war - does that fall under the purview of ethics? Some claim that war itself is not a subject of ethics; others hold that ethics deals strictly with interhuman relationships, not with the relationship between human beings and nature. We argue that the just war ( bellum justum) tradition of moral reflection points in another direction. It provides an ethical vocabulary for assessing the impact of war on our natural env…
