Did Opec change its behaviour after the November 2014 meeting
We analyse the behaviour of OPEC as a group by formulating a theoretical model that encompasses the perfect competition model and various forms of the imperfect competition model. By confronting the theoretical model with quarterly data for the period from 1992 to 2013 within the context of a cointegrated vector autoregressive (CVAR) model, we find support for the imperfect competition hypothesis regarding the output decisions of OPEC. We also fi…
The Consumption Euler Equation or the Keynesian Consumption Function
We formulate a general cointegrated vector autoregressive (CVAR) model that nests both a class of consumption Euler equations and various Keynesian‐type consumption functions. Using likelihood‐based methods and Norwegian data, we find support for cointegration between consumption, income and wealth once a structural break around the time of the financial crisis is allowed for. The fact that consumption cointegrates with both income and wealth and…
Forecasting Immigration in Official Population Projections Using an Econometric Model
Although substantial research has been conducted to quantify the determinants of international migration, most official population projections do not include such determinants in a formal migration model. Statistics Norway forecasts gross immigration to Norway using an econometric model based on standard migration theories. The main variables include income level, unemployment, and population size in Norway and the sending countries, and the numb…
The Effect on Immigration of Changes in Regulations and Policies
Net migration has become the main factor driving N orwegian population growth. This article explores how changes in regulations and immigration policies have affected gross immigration to N orway. As in previous econometric studies, it finds that income differences and income distribution have a bearing on immigration, as well as aspects of the labour market. Various immigration policies have largely had the expected effects, and N orway's member…

The Decline of Social-Democratic State Capitalism in Norway
Norway has, together with Sweden, often been idealized as the most successful case of postwar social democracy. Indeed, in economic terms the achievements are even more striking than those of its larger neighbour. Beginning the century on the agrarian fringe of European capitalism, Norway has been transformed into
Military Spending and Economic Growth in the OECD Countries
Cross-national comparisons of industrialized countries indicate that countries with a high defense burden (military spending as a share of GDP) tend to have lower rates of economic growth than do countries with a low defense burden. On the other hand, longitudinal data for several industrial countries indicate that economic growth is higher in periods with a high defense burden. This study attempts to overcome this apparent contradiction by pooli…
Conversion
Gleditsch, N. P., Bjerkholt, O. & Cappelen, Å. Conversion: Global, National and Local Effects. A Case Study of Norway. Cooperation and Conflict, XVIII, 1983, 179-195. A number of UN studies have linked the two objectives of disarmament and devel opment. A major recent UN research program, directed by a UN Group of Govern mental Experts, examined how resources may be diverted from the arms race to increased development transfers to the Third World…
