  • Neolithic Bodies in Vráble – 7000 year-old Headless Human Skeletons in an Enclosed LBK Settlement in South–West Slovakia

Open Access•Martin Furholt, Ivan Cheben et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•2026

We present here the extraordinary find of an Early Neolithic mass deposition of headless human bodies at the LBK settlement site of Vráble-Veľké Lehemby. While various scientific analyses are under way, we present the archaeological context of this find and preliminary osteological and taphonomic observations. We discuss these in the light of a patterned and meaningful depositional complexity in Vráble, which embeds into a larger corpus of human …

  • Pits, houses and rondels

Open Access•Maria Wunderlich, Till Kühl et al.•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2025

As an intensely debated period, the transition from the LBK to post-LBK societies remains in the centre of attention of researchers dealing with the Early Neolithic in Central Europe. The partly drastic change of the settlement systems, regarding both the patterns and organisation, is indeed an interesting subject and raises questions about the social and economic processes and changes that may have accompanied this development. With this contrib…

  • Trypillia mega-sites

    Open Access•Rebecca Hofmann, Nils Müller‐scheeßel et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2024•Referências: 35

Explanations for the emergence and abandonment of the Chalcolithic Trypillia mega-sites have long been debated. Here, the authors use Gini coefficients based on the sizes of approximately 7000 houses at 38 Trypillia sites to assess inequality between households as a factor in the rise and/or demise of these settlements. The results indicate temporarily reduced social inequality at mega-sites. It was only after several generations that increased s…

  • Radiocarbon dating and Hallstatt chronology

    Open Access•Hilary A Rose, Nils Müller‐scheeßel et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2022•Citada por: 8•Referências: 46

This study is first attempt to refine Early Iron Age absolute chronology, specifically the timing of the Hallstatt C-D transition in southern Germany, using Bayesian chronological modelling of radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates. The Hallstatt period (c.800–450 BC) marks the transition from prehistory to proto-history in Central Europe. The relative chronological framework for Hallstatt burials developed by the mid-twentieth century is still used today, bu…

  • Stable isotopic insights into crop cultivation, animal husbandry, and land use at the Linearbandkeramik site of Vráble-Veľké Lehemby (Slovakia)

Open Access•Rosalind E Gillis, Rebekka Eckelmann et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2020

The plant and animal components of Linearbandkeramik (LBK) subsistence systems were remarkably uniform with cattle, emmer and einkorn wheat providing the primary source of sustenance for Europe’s earliest agricultural communities. This apparent homogeneity in plant and animal use has been implicitly understood to indicate corresponding similarity in the types of husbandry practices employed by LBK farmers across the entire distribution of the LBK…

  • Orientation of Neolithic dwellings in Central and Southeast Europe

    Open Access•Rebecca Hofmann, Nils Müller‐scheeßel•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2020

This paper explores to what extent orientations of houses can contribute to chronological questions and to the cultural and social contextualisation in the Neolithic of Europe in general and societies with pottery styles labeled as Vinča and LBK in particular. First of all, the question is investigated to what extent systematic errors in the orientation of houses can contribute to the clarification of intra-site chronologies in tells and flat set…

  • What over 100 drillings tell us

    Open Access•Natalie Pickartz, Wolfgang Rabbel et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2020•Citada por: 2•Referências: 5

We investigate the relative fractions of remanent and induced magnetization of the fillings of neolithic long pits in order to develop remanent magnetization as an additional parameter for the archaeological interpretation of magnetic maps. We determine the Koenigsberger ratio – the ratio between induced and remanent magnetization intensities – for key targets by combining magnetic mapping with downhole measurements of susceptibility, numerical m…

  • Communality and Discord in an Early Neolithic Settlement Agglomeration

    Open Access•Martin Furholt, Nils Müller‐scheeßel et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Archaeological Journal•2020•Citada por: 6•Referências: 33

Our research at the large LBK settlement site of Vráble, southwest Slovakia, revealed dynamics of social integration and antagonisms unfolding in an agglomerated, early farming community. During its lifespan from 5250 to 4950 bc, it constantly grew until around 5050 bc it was inhabited by about 70 contemporaneous longhouses. We found that Vráble consisted of markedly autonomous farmstead units that were held together by village-wide social instit…

  • The dead of the Dietersberg Cave, Germany

    Open Access•Nils Müller‐scheeßel, Gisela Grupe et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2020•Citada por: 3•Referências: 39

The provenance and depositional setting of the human remains in the Dietersberg Cave, located in the Franconian Alb in Southern Germany, are evaluated based on 14C-dates and stable isotope analyses (C, N, O, Sr). Four basic scenarios are discussed: (1) human sacrifice, (2) 'regular' burial place for a small social unit, (3) special social group (e.g. slaves) and (4) special circumstances of death (e.g. fatal illness). Scenarios 1 and 2 are unlike…

  • Temporal dynamics of Linearbandkeramik houses and settlements, and their implications for detecting the environmental impact of early farming

    Open Access•John Meadows, Nils Müller‐scheeßel et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2019•Citada por: 8•Referências: 6

Long-held ideas concerning early Neolithic Linearbandkeramik (LBK) settlements in central Europe have been thoroughly challenged in recent years, for example, regarding their internal organisation or the use-life of individual houses. These topics have now also been addressed with the help of large radiocarbon ( 14 C) datasets. In the light of this discussion, we present findings of our ongoing research at Vráble in south-western Slovakia. Intens…

    Open Access•Erich Nowaczinski, Gerd Schukraft et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2015•Citada por: 3•Referências: 13

Irrespective of the region and time period, settlement pits are common features at archaeological sites. Variations in shape, size and fill reflect great diversity in terms of primary and secondary functions. Careful analysis of these aspects and a pit's refilling history yield key information for the reconstruction of economic, social and chronological aspects of settlement history. At present, it is unusual for a settlement site to undergo comp…

  • Towards a Social History of Archaeology

    Open Access•Nils Müller‐scheeßel, Nils Müller-Scheessel•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the History of…•2008•Referências: 6

While the general history of archaeology has received a growing interest lately1, these efforts still lack a common research-guiding agenda. Furthermore, most of the studies still concentrate on biographies and event history. The embedding of archaeology in the structures and conditions of its time is still a kind of terra incognita. The few well known publications (e. g. Hudson 1981; Kristiansen 1981; Patterson 1986; 1995) emphasize the gap only…
