Mortgage debt and domestic and outbound travel expenditures
We explore the relationship between the mortgage debt of households and their spending on domestic and outbound tourism and travel. We estimate a dynamic panel data model for a sample of 27 countries for 2010-2021, and find evidence for a negative relationship. Hence, we show that in countries where the mortgage per capita is high, residents allocate fewer expenditures on domestic and outbound tourism. We also find that the reduction in outbound …
The impact of a large-scale natural disaster on local economic activity
This study provides new causal evidence for the impact of a large-scale natural disaster on local economic activity in Iran using nighttime light intensity. We apply the synthetic control method (SCM) to nighttime light (NTL) data from 1992 to 2013 to study the impact of the 2003 Bam earthquake on Bam County in Iran and its neighboring counties. According to the results and statistical inference tests for the SCM, Bam County and its neighboring c…
Political connections and business sentiment in the Mena region
This study examines the relationship between firms’ political connections and their confidence in achieving enhanced future sales. Using firm-level survey data from selected Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) countries, we apply ordered probit regressions to show that businesses with board members who have political experience exhibit greater confidence in anticipating improved sales. This positive association remains robust after controllin…
The effect of international sanctions on the size of the middle class in Iran
This study examines the impact of international economic sanctions, imposed on Iran due to its nuclear program, on the development of its middle class. Specifically, it investigates how Iran's middle class would have evolved absent sanctions post-2012. Using the Synthetic Control Method (SCM) with nested optimization, we construct a counterfactual scenario for Iran based on a weighted average of comparable countries that mirror pre-2012 Iran but …
Economic sanctions, energy consumption, and CO2 emissions in Iran
Economic sanctions have the potential to affect environmental factors through various channels, including income reduction and constraints on accessing finance and environmentally friendly technologies. This study aims to simulate the energy and environmental consequences resulting from international sanctions in Iran. To achieve this, we develop a System Dynamics model integrating a spectrum of variables spanning economic, social, and environmen…
Internet, Inequality, and Regime Stability
This study examines the link between income inequality and political instability, focusing on the moderating role of Internet penetration. Using data from over 120 countries (1996–2020), we find a conditional relationship: in low‐Internet countries, higher inequality associates with lower instability, likely due to limited political awareness or collective action. In contrast, in highly connected societies, widespread Internet use amplifies econo…
Natural disaster literacy in Iran
Based on a survey of 502 participants conducted in 2020/2021, this study investigates the state of natural disaster literacy in the Iranian capital of Tehran, which is one of the main metropolitan areas of the country. The results of the empirical investigation using logistic regressions suggest that household income level, trust in Iran's natural disaster management, fear of natural disasters, perceived frequency of natural disasters, and intern…
Economic determinants of child marriage
This study investigates the economic determinants of early marriage among girls under 19, using panel data from thirty Iranian provinces between 2007 and 2015. The panel fixed effects and generalized method of moments (GMM) estimations, which control for province fixed effects such as local cultural norms or geographical conditions, show that the level of income per capita (with a negative effect), inflation, and income inequality (both with a po…
Is It Right to Fight? Evidence from Russia and Ukraine
We study the acceptability of war under certain conditions across individuals from Russia and Ukraine on the basis of World Values Survey in 2011. The period of analysis is before the beginning of military confrontations between the two countries (which started with the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in 2014). We discuss which socio-economic, political and individual characteristics shape the justification of war under certain con…
Firms persistence under sanctions
Given the importance of firm strategic management in the time of crisis, this study investigates Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) approaches to persistence during the international sanctions against Iran. Using data from a questionnaire of 486 firms between December 2019 and September 2020, we found that reducing research and development (R&D) expenditures, marketing costs and fixed/overhead costs and investing in information technolog…
Air pollution and internal migration
Air pollution has become an important national issue in Iran in recent years. Several studies in Iran have shown that air pollution harmfully impacts the physical and mental health of citizens, reducing labor productivity and student academic performance. One aspect of air pollution that is yet to be examined is if it explains migration behavior across the provinces of Iran. Between 2011 and 2016, approximately 4.3 million Iranians (about 5% of t…
Governments’ economic support for households during the Covid-19 pandemic and consumer confidence
To combat the adverse consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, governments have implemented various economic policies. This study examines how different types of government economic support for households are associated with consumer confidence. Utilizing data from 35 countries in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development for January 2020–October 2021 and applying panel fixed effect and system generalized methods of moments regress…
The effect of Islamic revolution and war on income inequality in Iran
Existing research has pointed to the decreasing effect of revolutions and wars on income inequality. It is unclear whether this reduction is the result of ongoing changes before revolutions and wars or if the results are standalone effects. In this study, we focus on the case of the Iranian Revolution of 1978–1979 and the subsequent Iran–Iraq war from 1980 to 1988. We use the synthetic control method to study the effect of revolution and war on c…

Does satisfaction with amenities and environment influence the taste for revolt in the middle east
The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between individuals’ satisfaction with amenities and environmental quality and taste for revolt in the Middle East. Using recent World Value Survey data (WVS7, 2017–2021) from Egypt and Iraq (which have been experiencing severe environmental degradation and inadequate and mismanagement of public infrastructure) and applying Probit regressions, our results show that satisfaction with ameniti…
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and votes in favor of Russia in the UN General Assembly
Why did some countries decline to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at the United Nations General Assembly’s first emergency session since 1997? Our research investigates the various economic, military, political, geographic, and historical factors that may have influenced the voting behavior of these countries in favor of Russia. Our Probit regressions reveal that the probability of voting in favor of Russia is significantly and robustly high…
A matter of trust? Political trust and the Covid-19 pandemic
There is significant cross-country variation in COVID-19 fatalities worldwide. In this study, we analyze the relationship between political trust and fatalities from the COVID-1s9 pandemic. By performing a cross-country analysis and controlling for other determinants, we find that government trust is negatively associated with the excess mortality rate during the pandemic
Effect of oil revenues on size and income of Iranian middle class
This paper investigates the effect of oil revenues on the middle-class size and income in Iran. Following Kharas (2017. The unprecedented expansion of the global middle class: An update. The Brookings Institution), it uses an absolute measure to define the middle class as those who earn between US$11 and US$110 per day (2011 PPP). The study employs annual time series data for 1965–2017 and a Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model along with impulse re…
The Impact of Oil Rents on Military Spending in the GCC Region
This study shows how the level of corruption matters in the way oil rents affect a state's military spending. Using panel data covering the 1984–2014 period for the Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC), we find that the effect of oil rents on military budgets depends on the extent of political corruption. Oil rents are negatively associated with military spending of the GCC countries. However this, in turn, is moderated by higher levels of corruption…
Institutions and the effectiveness of expenditures on environmental protection
Resource rents, balance of power, and political stability
We study the association between natural resource rents and internal political stability, highlighting the importance of the distribution of political power as a mediating factor. We present a simple theoretical model demonstrating that increased rents are likely to be positively associated with the internal stability of a powerful incumbent while destabilizing a less powerful incumbent. Our empirical analysis confirms this prediction. Employing …
