When older people develop delirium, their demeanor changes; they often behave in ways that are out of character and seem to inhabit another world. Despite this, little is known about the experiences of family members who are with their older loved one at this time. This article reports a phenomenological study that involved in-depth interviews with 14 women whose older loved one had delirium. Analysis and interpretation of the data depict the wom…

Older Australians with cognitive impairment benefit from advance care planning (ACP). However, myths and misunderstandings prevail. Data for this case study involving mixed methods were collected to explore experiences of older people and family members with ACP in three residential care facilities. Close analysis of phenomena within ACP led to greater awareness of what constitutes 'dying well'. The implications of ACP are not limited to planning…

  • Inside the PAR group

    Open Access•Fatemeh Adili, Isabel Higgins et al.•ARTICLE•Action Research•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 3

We researched alongside older Australian women who were newly diagnosed with type II diabetes. This inquiry was guided by Koch and Kralik’s participatory action research (PAR) methodology. We asked women to talk about their self-management and learning post-diagnosis and continued to talk with them for 12 months. Once we had built relationships we asked women to join group discussion. Ten PAR group sessions were held over six months. The focus of…

  • Reflections on Conducting Qualitative Research with Elderly People

    Open Access•Isabel Higgins•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•1998•Cited by: 6•References: 18

It should come as no surprise that conducting research with elderly people can be challenging and problematic. A review of the literature in this area provides some indication of what many other researchers have encountered, particularly in relation to doing quantitative studies. The majority of these challenges deal with issues involving consent. Although there have been a few articles dealing with doing qualitative research with this population…
