Out of the Dark Ages and into the Light
It is a challenging task to pick one favorite article in the sixty-plus-year history of our journal, Ethnohistory. I’m particularly handicapped because I have a complete run of the journal in all its vicissitudes from a pamphlet of the Ohio Valley Historical Conference, spearheaded at Indiana University by our founding mother, Erminie Wheeler-Voegelin, to later incarnations of the journal emanating from Tempe, Arizona, and Texas Tech in Lubbock. …

The Ethnohistory of Events and Nonevents
My original title was perverse. However, I have never regarded myself as one to flee in the face of perversity. I chronically suffer from a pathological form of premature entitlement. When asked or required to present a paper, I usually invent a clever title and then expend much worrisome effort trying to justify it. My original title, The Ethnohistory of Nonevents, was too clever by half-thus the revised title. Andre Gide remarked in one of his …
The Indian Man: A Biography of James Mooney
The Indian Man examines the life of James Mooney (1861-1921), the son of poor Irish immigrants who became a champion of Native peoples and one of the most influential anthropology fieldworkers of all time. As a staff member of the Smithsonian Institution for over three decades, Mooney conducted fieldwork and gathered invaluable information on rapidly changing Native American cultures across the continent. His fieldwork among the Eastern Cherokees…

Who Were the Ani-Kutani? An Excursion into Cherokee Historical Thought
Evidence assembled and examined in this article reviews a prehistoric revolt by the Cherokees against a priestly class or hereditary clan, the Ani-Kutain, whose members, according to legend, were massacred in a public uprising in response to their corruption and sexual improprieties. Some evidence relates the Ani-Kutani to the historic Cherokee clan, the Ani-gilohf; and some, to the historic Cherokee Fire priests. The author interprets the legend…
