  • The archaeology of medieval and early modern battlefields in Flanders

Glenn Foard, Tracey Partida•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Archaeology•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The first pre-modern battlefield survey in Flanders was a pilot study at Oudenaarde in 2007. Three projects followed, between 2011 and 2013, funded by the Flemish Heritage Agency: an assessment of battlefields for inclusion on the Archaeological Inventory; a survey of Oudenaarde battlefield (1708); and an assessment of Lafelt battlefield (1747). This article reviews these projects in a wider context to reveal the current state of pre-modern battl…

  • Where are the dead of medieval battles? A preliminary survey

    Open Access•Alba Curry, Glenn Foard•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Archaeology•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Only a handful of mass graves from late medieval battles in Western Europe have been subject to large scale excavation to modern standards. The principal reason is that these, and indeed even early modern battlefield graves, have proven extremely elusive, most being identified by chance. Despite a few successes, no combination of prospecting techniques yet provides a consistently effective method of locating such small archaeological features set…

  • Case Shot

Derek Allsop, Glenn Foard•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Archaeology•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This article reports on the first stage of a programme of ongoing experimental research to reproduce the firing of artillery case shot of the 17th century, to recover the distribution of the bullets fired, and to analyse their character, to assist in interpretation of case shot distributions from surveys of 17th century battlefields

  • Medieval Woodland, Agriculture and Industry in Rockingham Forest, Northamptonshire

    Glenn Foard•ARTICLE•Medieval Archaeology•2001•Cited by: 5

Rockingham Forest is the most intensively studied of Northamptonshire's medieval forests. It saw extensive clearance for agriculture in the medieval period but large tracts of woodland survived and these were increasingly intensively managed. Though primarily nucleated, a dispersed component to the settlement pattern did develop in the forest which was not seen in the champion landscapes of the county. The area supported a range if industrial pro…

  • Systematic fieldwalking and the investigation of Saxon settlement in Northamptonshire

    Glenn Foard•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•1977•Cited by: 12•References: 9

The full potential of fieldwalking survey has not generally been realized. There are many limitations in the use of this survey method, but a series of systematic techniques is suggested which may significantly increase the quantity and quality of information collected by field‐walking. The application of such techniques to the study of Saxon settlement in Northamptonshire is discussed. The results obtained cast doubt on the generally accepted id…
