  • Reconstruction of Natural Conditions in the Lower Volga Region Based on Spore-Pollen Analysis Data of the Zelmen Peat Bog (Republic of Kalmykia)

    Open Access•N E Ryabogina, I A Idrisov et al.•ARTICLE•Nizhnevolzhskiy Arheologicheskiy…•2026

The article presents the results of palynological analysis of the Zelmen peat bog in the Yergeni Upland (Republic of Kalmykia). Based on the data obtained, the dynamics of paleoecological conditions in the Lower Volga region over the past 3000 years are reconstructed. These reconstructions are compared with the results of long-term studies of buried soils under kurgans. It was found that the most humid conditions in the Lower Volga region occurre…

  • Phytolith Studies of Ash Heaps of Bronze Age Settlements of the Southern Trans-Urals

    Open Access•M Yu Solomonova, E V Kupriyanova et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2024

Scientific research methods have a wide range of applications in archaeology, and in combination with the results of excavations, they provide crucial data for resolution of controversial issues. One of the debatable issues of studying the Eurasia Bronze Age is the origin of the so-called ash heaps near settlements. The presented study is devoted to the analysis of the microbiomorphic and phytolytic composition of ash layers of three settlements …

  • Genesis and functions of the Late Bronze Age ash heaps in the Southern Trans-Urals in the context of new interdisciplinary research

    Open Access•E V Kupriyanova, M Yu Solomonova et al.•ARTICLE•Vestnik arheologii, antropologii…•2024•References: 10

In this article, we discuss the results of the study of ash heaps typical for the steppe belt of the Urals, Ka-zakhstan and Siberia. These are specific objects adjacent to settlements of the Middle and Late Bronze Age, their cultural layer contains archaeological finds and consists of loose soil similar in appearance to ash. However, de-bates about their nature and purpose use mainly archaeological arguments and very rarely involve interdiscipli-…

  • Interdisciplinary research of ash heap sediment near Stepnoye settlement (Chelyabinsk Oblast)

    Open Access•E V Kupriyanova, M Yu Solomonova et al.•ARTICLE•Vestnik arheologii, antropologii…•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 17

An ash heap is defined as a specific object at an archaeological site, usually in the form of a separate hillock containing a layer of finely-dispersed greyish-yellow or ash-coloured soil. The existing assumptions about the formation and functional pur-pose of ash heaps, as special archaeological objects found near the Bronze Age pastoral settlements, have so far been poorly supported by scientific data. At the ash heap near the Sintashta fortifi…

  • Paleoenvironmental studies of lakeside watershed settlements of the Tobol-Ishim inter-fluve (Zolotoe 1 settlement, Kurgan Oblast)

    Open Access•N E Ryabogina, E D Trubitsyna et al.•ARTICLE•Vestnik arheologii, antropologii…•2022•References: 14

During the study of the process of settling people in the territory of the forest-steppe and steppe zones of Western Siberia, both valleyside settlement sites of the Bronze Age and watershed lakeside settlements have been identified. The settlement of Zolotoe 1 is one of the few sites of the Late Bronze Age investigated by excava-tions and confined to the vast water-dividing surface between the rivers Tobol and Ishim in Kurgan Oblast. Two stages …

  • Microbiomarkers of the local environment and interior of Neolithic and Eneolithic dwellings (settlements of Mergen 6 and 7)

    Open Access•N E Ryabogina, E D Trubitsyna et al.•ARTICLE•Vestnik arheologii, antropologii…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 8

The paper concerns the analysis of the local environment around the multi-layer settlements of Mergen 6 and 7 situated in the immediate vicinity of each other. The settlements existed successively (partly contempora-neously in the early and high Neolithic) in the forest-steppe belt of Western Siberia. Two methods were chosen to obtain the results: spore-and-pollen (palynological) and microbiomorphic analyses of the cultural layers of the settleme…

  • Palaeoecological reconstructions in the Tobol-Ishim interfluve

    Open Access•N E Ryabogina, E D Trubitsyna et al.•ARTICLE•Vestnik arheologii, antropologii…•2020•References: 15

The study, based on uniformed criteria, summarizes a large series of palynological data and is aimed at re-construction of the vegetation history of the second half of the Holocene based on pollen data from peatlands. The main objective of this work is to compare the results of palynological studies from cultural layers of 30 Neo-lithic-Medieval archaeological sites (on-site data) and five natural archives (off-site records) in the sub-taiga and …
