The Preservation and Interpretation of δ 34 S Values in Charred Archaeobotanical Remains
The measurement of sulphur isotope (δ 34 S) values in charred plant remains has the potential to inform understanding of the spatial configuration and ecology of crop production. We investigated the effects of charring, manuring, oxidation and anaerobic soil conditions on modern cereal grain/pulse seed δ 34 S values, and assessed the effect of chemical pre‐treatment on charred modern and archaeobotanical grain/seed δ 34 S values. We used these re…
The effect of charring and burial on the biochemical composition of cereal grains
Assessing natural variation and the effects of charring, burial and pre-treatment on the stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values of archaeobotanical cereals and pulses
Stable carbon isotope analysis as a direct means of inferring crop water status and water management practices
Stable carbon isotope analysis of plant remains is a promising tool for researchers studying palaeoclimate and past agricultural systems. The potential of the technique is clear: it offers a direct measure of the water conditions in which plants grew. In this paper, we assess how reliably stable carbon isotope discrimination can be used to infer water conditions, through the analysis of present-day crop plants grown at multiple locations across t…
Integrating botanical, faunal and human stable carbon and nitrogen isotope values to reconstruct land use and palaeodiet at LBK Vaihingen an der Enz, Baden-Württemberg
In this paper we reconstruct the palaeodietary setting of LBK Vaihingen an der Enz, south-west Germany (later sixth millennium cal. bc) using C-13 and N-15 values of human and faunal bone collagen and of charred plant remains from cereal crops (e.g. emmer and einkorn wheat) and pulses (lentil and pea). Our examination of this Neolithic dietary food web' incorporates crop N-15 values within a linear-mixing model to examine the estimated proportion…
Manuring and stable nitrogen isotope ratios in cereals and pulses
The impact of manuring on nitrogen isotope ratios in cereals
The 15 N natural abundance (δ 15 N) of ecosystem samples reflects measures of water availability
We assembled a globally-derived data set for site-averaged foliar δ15N, the δ15N of whole surface mineral soil and corresponding site factors (mean annual rainfall and temperature, latitude, altitude and soil pH). The δ15N of whole soil was related to all of the site variables (including foliar δ15 N) except altitude and, when regressed on latitude and rainfall, provided the best model of these data, accounting for 49% of the variation in whole s…
Carbon and oxygen isotope variations among lacustrine ostracods
Large ranges of 13 C/ 12 C and 18 O/ 16 O ratios are found among modem ostracods from lakes in Jamaica and Mexico. If their calcite carapaces grew in isotopic equilibrium with the lake water, then the main period of carapace formation was probably in the cooler and/or wetter months. Differences in δ 13 C and δ 18 O values between ostracods from different sites relate to spatial variations in the composition of the lake water, and differences betw…

Dissolved Gas Paleotemperatures and 18 O Variations Derived from Groundwater Near Uitenhage, South Africa
Under the near-ideal hydrologic conditions provided by the Uitenhage artesian aquifer, reliable estimates of paleotemperatures were obtained by measurement of the dissolved N 2 and Ar in groundwater, confidently dated in the range 28,000 yr B.P. to the present using 14 C. The mean annual air temperature in this area during the last glaciation is calculated to have been, on average, 1/2°C lower than during the Holocene. The change in the 18 O/ 16 …
