Plant-ash glass in Natronland
This article examines available evidence for the use of plant ashes in glassmaking in the Mediterranean basin and Europe from the 1st to the 8th-9th century CE. During this period, glassmaking in these regions was overwhelmingly dominated by mineral fluxes, primarily natron, but the chemical composition of some glasses found in secure archaeological contexts suggests the use of plant ashes in these glasses, which are, on the other hand, compositi…
The glass from the Barco de las Pipas
This article presents the typological and chemical analysis of a small glass assemblage recovered from a, likely Dutch, early 17th-century shipwreck known as Barco de las Pipas, found off the coast of the Province of Montecristi, Dominican Republic. All fifteen glass fragments recovered during underwater excavation were typologically characterised, sampled, and analysed using Electron Micro-Probe Analysis (EMPA) for major and minor elements and L…
The Atlantic Road. Late Antique/Early Medieval Glass Trade in the Iberian North-West
[EN] This article reviews the position of the north-western Iberian Peninsula in trade networks in the European Atlantic façade in the 6th and early 7th centuries ad, particularly the role played by the harbour of Vigo. The scale and dimension of the Atlantic route in late-antique/early-medieval trade are examined in light of both the archaeological and historical records. Importantly, the position held by glass in this trade is examined in depth…
The glass from the arrabal of Arrixaca (Murcia, 12th-13th centuries)
This article presents an assemblage of 36 glass samples excavated in the urban site of San Esteban, part of the arrabal of Arrixaca (Murcia) (in al-Andalus, an arrabal was a relatively dense urbanised area outside the city walls) in contexts securely dated to the 12th and early 13th century, spanning the rule of Ibn Mardanīš, and the early period of Almohad domination in the city. The samples were analysed by electron microprobe (EMPA) for major …
Text, practice, and experience
How might an interdisciplinary approach involving experimental archaeology improve our knowledge of glassmaking in medieval Iberia? Our current limited understanding lacks an appreciation of how surviving remains were created through the actual practice of glassmaking—herein lies the biggest single gap in knowledge. Archaeological experiments show that while the infima glassmaking recipe offers a credible guide to basic glassmaking technology, it…
Glassmaking in medieval technical literature in the Iberian Peninsula
This paper examines glassmaking in medieval Iberia from the point of view of technical literature, especially recipe books and alchemical treatises, in an attempt to assess to what extent this literary genre (if it is to be defined as such) may have affected, or have been affected by, technological developments in glassmaking between the eighth and sixteenth centuries. Iberian technical literature on the making of glass is put in connection with …
Recipes and experimentation? The transmission of glassmaking techniques in Medieval Iberia
This paper explores the potential of a combined historical and archaeological approach to the study of glass production in the Iberian Peninsula in the Late Middle Ages. The historical study of technical recipes compiled during the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern period and the compositional analysis of archaeological material offer different, but equally valuable, insights into glass production. The methodologies, potential and limitations…
