  • Paths shared between people (Homo sapiens sapiens) and dogs (Canis familiaris): From aid therapy partners to friends and family members

Open Access•Maria João Moreira, Susana Costa et al.•ARTICLE•Achta Scientiarum Human Social…•2024

Dogs (Canis familiaris) were the first domesticated species and today, they still have a central role in our societies. Integrated in the post-humanistic approach, we aimed to understand the evolution of the different social roles assumed by dogs, specifically, aid therapy dogs (ATD) that warn human diabetics of the changes that occur in their blood glycemia. Our main objective was to see if at some point in these shared paths, ATD would start be…

  • Antropologia multi-espécie: Breves Perspetivas Teóricas Do Antropocentrismo À Aceitação Da Subjetividade Não Humana

  • Chasing a ghost: Notes on the present distribution and conservation of the sooty mangabey (Cercocebus atys) in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa

Open Access•Maria Janiele Ferreira Da Silva, Christina Lynette Paddock et al.•ARTICLE•Primates•2020

The West-African sooty mangabey ( Cercocebus atys ) is threatened by habitat loss, hunting for meat consumption, and mortality during crop-foraging events. The species’ overall demographic trend is unknown. Presence and distribution in Guinea-Bissau, a country neighbored by Senegal and Republic of Guinea, was confirmed in 1946 but the species was declared extinct in 1989 and not observed in subsequent countrywide expeditions. Narratives of its pr…

  • What Does Conservation Mean for Women? the Case of the Cantanhez Forest National Park

Open Access•Susana Costa, Catarina Casanova et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation and Society•2017

Community-based conservation programmes need to engage the support of all its members. Gender is a key component in shaping attitudes about conservation, and lack of attention to gender differences in perceptions can work against the aims of community-based conservation actions and initiatives. We present a study of the obstacles to women's participation in conservation strategies associated with Cantanhez Forest National Park (CFNP), in Guinea-B…

It hosts many different animal species, including the chimpanzee ( Pan troglodytes verus ). Very little is known about the ecology of chimpanzees inhabiting this area. The main aims of this study were to evaluate chimpanzee nesting behavior, define trends of habitat us…

  • Innovative social behavior in chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes )

Open Access•Catarina Casanova, Ricardo Mondragón‐Ceballos et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2008

We present evidence of agonistic buffering in captive chimpanzees, recorded from 1993 until 2005, mainly from ad libitum sampling in over 2000 hr of observation. A total of 33 agonistic buffering episodes were analyzed for context and effects of this complex social behavior. Agonistic buffering was directed at the whole chimpanzee colony as they supported an individual who initially received aggression from the alpha male, independently of the vi…

  • Are great apes aggressive? A cross‐species comparison

    Open Access•Cláudia Sousa, Catarina Casanova•ARTICLE•Antropologia Portuguesa•2006

This paper aims to characterise the aggressive behaviour of great apes: the orang‐utan, the gorilla, the chimpanzee and the bonobo. We start by discussing the lack of consensual definitions for terms such as violence, aggression and agonistic behaviour. Secondly, we describe the evidence of aggression in each species. Finally we describe several referential models developed to explain the way of life and aggressive behaviour of the first hominins…
