  • Norms concerning the recognition of victimhood in postconflict societies: An analysis of “whatabouteries” in online sectarian arguments

    Open Access•W M L Finlay, J Cattier et al.•ARTICLE•Political Psychology•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 51

Acknowledging the victims on both sides of a conflict is crucial to peacebuilding and reconciliation. However, recognizing the victims of one community can challenge an opposing group's conflict narrative, particularly when their own group is seen as the primary victim. Suggestions of inclusive victimhood and blame can also threaten the sense of distinctiveness of each group's experience, leading to resistance. This article examines the conflict …

  • Diverse but shallow, unrealistic but influential: Women's Dilemmas When Viewing Plus-Sized Models of Colour on Billboards

Open Access•Carol Owens, Craig Owens et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Gender Studies•2025•References: 35

In Western women’s clothing marketing, portrayals of slender white female bodies are ubiquitous and unavoidable. However, in 2018, a multitude of images of plus-size models of colour were posted on billboards at bus, train and underground stations in London. We undertook focus groups with women based in London to explore how they made sense of these images. Our findings show participants grappling with two dilemmas: they celebrated that the image…

  • Clothes shopping is a chore: Plus-size men’s experiences of clothes shopping in the United Kingdom

Carol Owens, Sarah Smith•ARTICLE•Fashion Style & Popular Culture•2024

The body positivity movement has called for greater inclusion of diverse body types within the fashion industry. Although a growing number of high street womenswear brands now include plus-size ranges and employ curvier models to represent them, UK menswear is still trailing far behind. Fashionable clothing for larger men is scarce, and the lack of research literature on the clothes shopping experiences of UK plus-size male consumers reflects thi…

  • Precarities of 21st Century Childhoods: Critical Explorations of Time(s), Place(s), and Identities

    Michael O'Loughlin, Carol Owens et al.•BOOK•Precarities of 21st Century…•2023

This book locates internally focused, critical perspectives regarding the social, political, emotional, and mental growth of children. Through the radical openness afforded by psychoanalytic and related frameworks, this volume illuminates, promotes, and helps situate subjectivities that are often blotted out for both the child and society. The overall emphasis is on motifs of lostness and foundness, in terms of the geographies of the psycho-socia…

Drawing on media reports that discuss these male/male partnerships, this paper explores how the partnerships…

    Open Access•Christine Campbell, Carol Owens et al.•ARTICLE•Feminist Media Studies•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 12

  • How do girls’ magazines talk about breasts

    Open Access•Nicola Brown, Christine Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•Feminism & Psychology•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 15

Girls’ magazines play an important role in female adolescents’ identity and their constructions of femininity. Despite breast development being common to all female adolescents, and breasts being a key signifier of femininity, the representation of breasts in girls’ magazines has not been investigated. A Foucauldian discourse analysis was conducted to understand the ways in which breasts are represented in two popular girls’ magazines ( Teen Vogu…

  • How do we defeat the ‘dark side’? Analysing a call to tackle lad culture at a UK university

    Open Access•Carol Owens•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 32

Extensive feminist critique of lad culture has raised serious concerns about its role in the sexualisation and objectification of women; its association with ‘pack‐like’ boisterous behaviour and pressured heavy drinking of alcohol; and its use of banter, irony and infantile humour to provide a protective shield for sexist and homophobic practices. These concerns have culminated in the National Union of Students calling for lad culture to be tackl…

Carol Owens, Craig Owens et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Gender Studies•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 33

Inclusive Masculinity Theory (IMT) offers an important framework for conceptualizing masculinities within cultures characterized by declining homophobia. But the framework faces several challenges when it theorizes masculinities as relatively stable sets of attitudes and behaviours in the context of complex and dynamic contemporary gender practices and identifications. Offering a solution through a poststructuralist-informed IMT (PS-IMT), we reco…

  • How do men's magazines talk about penises

    Open Access•Carol Owens, Christine Campbell•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 48

Constructions of masculinity have shifted and changed but the central role of the penis has remained firm. Yet, despite the implications for sexual health, there has been very little research on discourses around penises. The messages men receive about their manhood is apparent in articles in men's magazines. We conducted a discursive analysis of the ways in which penises were discussed in four market leading UK titles: Loaded, Men's Health, GQ a…

Pregnancy occurring in girls under the age of 17 is of particular interest to those providing obstetric care and family planning services, as well as to the social welfare services in the community. Childbirth in girls of this age carries greater risk to mother and child than in the immediately older age groups and a young mother having a baby, whether married or not, may face social and economic difficulties. This study is designed to find out b…
