  • Kin Expectations and Kin Support Among Rural Older Adults1

    Open Access•Edward A Powers, Vira R Kivett•ARTICLE•Rural Sociology•1992•Cited by: 8•References: 28

Relatively little attention has been given to the kin ties of rural older adults. To partially fill this gap in knowledge, kin selection theory was used as a conceptual framework to explore two questions on the extent rural older adults expect and receive assistance from the range of affinal and consanquineal kin and the factors that best explain the current level of support provided by each of the kin types in the family system. Analysis was bas…

  • Change, Resources and Self-Esteem in a Community of Women Religious

Susan C Daniewicz, Joyce Mcdonough Mercier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Women & Aging•1991

The effect of change and resources to cope with that change on self-esteem is explored in a study of a community of Catholic women religious. These middle-aged and elderly women are highly educated with life long attachment to the workforce. In addition, they have all experienced a high degree of change in their lives. • The family and friends of rural aged as a natural support system

    Open Access•Joyce Mcdonough Mercier, J Mercier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•1984•References: 20

The literature on natural support systems of rural aged is examined from the perspective of functional specificity. Although family and friends are prominent in the support systems of both rural and urban aged, there are differences in support systems. Further, rural aged have more transportation, housing, and health problems than do urban aged. A number of program recommendations are made that will benefit rural as well as urban aged as future r…

  • Employment Characteristics and Psychological Well-Being of Men in Two-Job Families

    Open Access•Pat M Keith, Willis J Goudy et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1981

Research has neglected the well-being of men in two-job families and especially that of older men. This study of 213 older men in two-job families indicated that the occupational characteristics of their wives were as salient in the life evaluations of men as aspects of their own employment. Even so, occupational involvement of men and their wives and male participation in the household did not account for much of the variance in self-esteem or l…

  • Congruence Between Panel and Recall Data in Longitudinal Research

    Edward A Powers, Willis J Goudy et al.•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•1978•Cited by: 12•References: 3

Social researchers frequently are cautioned about using retrospective self-reports because of the likelihood of inaccurate reporting. To determine whether the responses to recall items differ from self-reports obtained at an earlier point in time, data were examined from a panel study of adult men. In 1964, respondents were questioned about their health, income, family, work, and general attitudes. Ten years later, all who could be located were r…

Three hundred fifty-three registered nurses were asked their perceptions of the economic need for continued employment, the 'threat' to the husband if her salary was greater than his, and the husband's view of the need for his wife's employment. Most did not feel their husbands would be threatened if their wives had a greater income. Respondents generally saw a greater economic need than they felt their husbands did. A comparison is made between …

  • Cultural Contradictions and Sex Roles Revisited

    Open Access•Dwight G Dean, Edward A Powers et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1975•References: 10

The Komarovsky-Wallin thesis of women's pretending inferiority in dating situations was replicated (287 women) and is challenged. Questions are raised as to the appropriate collapsing of categories of responses and the incidence of pretended inferiority in relation to number of dates. Data from a comparison sample of men (318 men) are also presented. Evidence does not sustain the belief of women's pretensions of inferiority

  • Correspondence between Anticipated and Actual Uses of Public Services by the Aged

    Edward A Powers, Gordon L Bultena•ARTICLE•Social Service Review•1974•Cited by: 1

Rising public concern for ameliorating social problems in American society has produced many social surveys. These surveys typically seem to demonstrate, through verbal or written statements obtained from samples of individuals representing particular target populations, both the nature of existing needs and the desire for public services. Needs of client systems usually have been identified by asking individuals what they consider their own and/…
