  • Einige Beobachtungen zum Juda der Perserzeit in der Darstellung des Josephus, Antiquitates Buch 11

Peter Höffken•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Judaism•2008•Cited by: 1

For Josephus 3 Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther are the main sources for the history of the Persian era. His description of the final phase of the Persian domination focuses on three major incidents: the fratricide in the temple and the intervention of Bagoses; the foundation of the Gerizim Temple, which originated in an inner-Judean conflict and Alexander's visit of Jerusalem. This material, as well as the account of the transition of the empire to the…

  • Bileams Ratschlag und seine Eigenart bei Josephus

    Peter Höffken•ARTICLE•Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses•2007

Balaam's advice is being expounded on the basis of Numbers 31,16. It is then generalized by Philo (Vit Mos I) and to a lesser degree by PseudoPhilo. Josephus offers a variant of this. It is evident that in the first part of his Balaam - speech he deals with the consequences of the advice in a reductive manner. The seduction of young Israelites or Judeans by female foreigners will not succeed ultemately but will rebound punitively on those who ins…

  • "Überlegungen zum Leserkreis der „Antiquitates" des Josephus

Peter Höffken•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Judaism•2007

The "ideal reader" is a reader for whom the author of a work is writing. Therefore he is essential for the constitution of a text. In the case of Josephus the proem of the Antiquitates shows clearly who this ideal reader is: A member of the Greek/Greek-speaking world, interested in religion and culture of Israel (and other religions and cultures). Sometimes Josephus is also speaking of a Jewish readership, but this has not a decisive role for the…

Beobachtungen Zu Seiner Auffassung Von Daniel 5

Peter Höffken•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Judaism•2005

This article seeks to show that the idea in Josephus, Ant 10:232-248, that the Babylonian empire was divided between Darius the Mede and Cyrus the Persian has developed from different texts in the Old Testament that speak about the fall of Babylon through Medes or the Persian Cyrus. The article discusses some materials in Josephus that show that the author is doing similar things elsewhere in his work

  • Ein Unwetter in Jerusalem Beobachtungen Zu Bj 4

Peter Höffken•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Judaism•2003

In BJ 4:286-288 Josephus is presenting an episode of the war: an inner-Jewish conflict between the people of Jerusalem and the Zealots. In this conflict the Idumeans join the party of the rebels. A stormy weather with earthquake is interpreted by both parties as a sign of an imminent action of God, who rescues Jerusalem and beats the enemies outside the city. The article argues for an interpretation of this theme on the background of the Zion-tra…
