Gustaf Dalman, Arbeit und Sitte in Palästina
Gustaf Dalman's magnum opus, Arbeit und Sitte in Palästina (AuS), published in seven volumes between 1928 and 1942 with a posthumous fragmentary eighth volume published in 2001, remains one of the greatest works of modern biblical scholarship. Beginning with a description of the course of the year and ending with funerary customs, the work comprehensively covers all aspects of late 19th and early 20thcentury life in Palestine and Syria. The Cambridge Companion to Law in the Hebrew Bible
This Companion offers a comprehensive overview of the history, nature, and legacy of biblical law. Examining the debates that swirl around the nature of biblical law, it explores its historical context, the significance of its rules, and its influence on early Judaism and Christianity. The volume also interrogates key questions: Were the rules intended to function as ancient Israel's statutory law? Is there evidence to indicate that they served a…
The Literary History of Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy presents itself a series of farewell speeches delivered by Moses in the plains of Moab on the last day of his life. The addressees are a new generation of Israelites who are prepared for the entry into the land. Deuteronomy, then, marks a pause on Israel’s path towards the Promised Land and its main focus appears to be the realisation of the promise and law of Yahweh. In contrast to previous stipulations delivered to the people of Isr…
Law in the Eastern Mediterranean
This chapter looks at the legal texts from ancient Greece and Crete and connections they may share with biblical law. The Greek laws offer rich comparative material for legal problems in a geographically and culturally adjacent area and contribute to a better understanding of the social interactions and administrative structures in and around the Mediterranean.
Place and Space in the Song of Songs
The article investigates the role of space in the Song of Songs. Taking recent theoretical insights into spatiality (M. Foucault, E. Soja, H. Lefebvre) as a starting point for an exegesis of selected passages from Song of Songs (Cant 4,12-5,1; 6,2 f.) it is argued that by using the imagery of the garden and the vineyard, Song of Songs creates spaces that are in between the enclosed world of city and house and the wide-open countryside. Since the …
Law and Religion in the Eastern Mediterranean
This volume addresses the similarities and differences in the role played by law and religion in various societies across the Eastern Mediterranean. Approaching these subjects in an all-encompassing manner, it also looks at the notion of law and religion in this region as a whole, in both the geographical as well as the historical space
Judah and the Judeans In the Achaemenid Period
The Pentateuch as Torah
Since antiquity, the five books of Moses have served as a sacred constitution, foundational for both Jews and Samaritans. However long the process of accepting the Pentateuch as authoritative tōrâ (“instruction”) took, this was by all accounts a monumental achievement in the history of these peoples and indeed an important moment in the history of the ancient world. In the long development of Western societies, the Pentateuch has served as a majo…
Perspectives on the Song of Songs / Perspektiven der Hoheliedauslegung
The collection of essays contains nineteen contributions that aim at locating the Song of Songs in its ancient context as well as addressing problems of interpretation and the reception of this biblical book in later literature. In contrast to previous studies this work devotes considerable attention to parallels from the Greek world without neglecting the Ancient Near East or Egypt. Several contributions deal with the use of the Song in Byzantin…
