Agamemnon's Deception
Agamemnon’s Deception William F. Wyatt Brown University Agamemnon1 in the Iliad argues that he has been deceived by Zeus on a number of occasions. In Book 19.85–89, he argues that he was deluded by Zeus and is thus not guilty of having insulted Achilles intentionally:2 pollavki dhv moi tou`ton ∆Acaioi; mu`qon e[eipon, kaiv tev me neikeiveskon: ejgw; d∆ oujk ai[tiov~ eijmi, ajlla; Zeu;~ kai; Moi`ra kai; hjerofoi`ti~ ∆Erinuv~, oi{ tev moi eijn ajgo…
Goethe's "Wanderer's Night Song" in Vizyenos
Vizyenos twice quotes Goethe's Wandrers Nachtlied in his story, in Greek, and in his own translation. A comparison of the translation with Goethe's original reveals that Vizyenos has adapted rather than translated the original. Vizyenos introduces the ideas of a partner and the sleep of death, matters not contained in Goethe's poem, thus fitting the poem thematically to his own story. Story and poem interact, and the Goethe-Vizyenos poem influenc…

The Ceiling of the Hephaisteion
The marble ceiling of the Hephaisteion was apparently designed with removable coffers to reduce the weight of the superstructure, so numerous masons' marks (at least 300 are preserved) were needed because each coffer was carved for its own particular place in the ceiling. The presence of an alphabetic series of letters allows a reconstruction of the Attic alphabet at the time: it had 23 letters from alpha through chi, including digamma, eta and x…

Initial /wo/ in Greek
In a recent review Henry M. Hoenigswald brought into conjunction two facts of ancient Greek phonology which have in the past been considered separately. He did not, however, state categorically that they represent two facets of the same development, but merely suggested that they might. I hope to show in this paper that they are indeed connected, and that by treating them together we can clarify the phonology of the sequence /wo/ in Greek. The tw…
Structural Linguistics and the Laryngeal Theory
One of the factors preventing the wider acceptance of the laryngeal theory of Proto-Indo-European phonology may be that it is rarely presented in a consistent manner. Those who accept the validity of the theory generally work from it as a basis rather than towards it as the thing to be explained. Hence an opponent of the theory is apt to be presented with arguments of several different sorts. One such argument is the pragmatic one that frequently…
