  • Ekphrasis in P and in ‘Ezekiel’

Simeon Chavel, Simeon B Chavel•ARTICLE•Postscripts The Journal of Sacred…•2026

This essay compares how ekphrasis is used to draw the image of a god and the godly things around him and how obedience is a key quality in being in the god’s proximity. It argues that in The Priestly Story, ekphrasis creates an objective view of the god, one of beauty, knowledge, and control. It is provided by the god himself and the omniscient narrator. And, centered on the god’s living space, it serves a poetics of deflection. By viewing the Ta…

This Companion offers a comprehensive overview of the history, nature, and legacy of biblical law. • Oracular Law and Priestly Historiography in the Torah

    Simeon Chavel•BOOK•Oracular Law and Priestly…•2014

In this study, Simeon Chavel establishes the existence of a distinct type of story within the Torah, the »oracular novella,« traces its contours and poetics, identifies its historical background, and analyzes its use. The oracular novella is a very short story with a legal climax, in which divine adjudication and legislation resolves human complication. In a spartan style, the narrative recounts how an incident or set of circumstances in Israel l…

  • The Face of God and the Etiquette of Eye-Contact

    Simeon Chavel•ARTICLE•Jewish Studies Quarterly•2012

  • The Second Passover, Pilgrimage, and the Centralized Cult

    Open Access•Simeon Chavel•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•2009

The passage in Numbers 9:1-14 presents new legislation on the Passover sacrifice. For one who contracted impurity immediately prior to the Passover or was too far away to participate in it, the amendment prescribes an alternate date, one month later: When any of you or your posterity who are defiled by a corpse or are on a long journey would offer a passover sacrifice to the Lord, they shall offer it in the second month, on the fourteenth day of …
