שִׁישַׁק or שׁוּשַׁק – Or שׁוּשַׁק and שִׁישַׁק
The question of the original form of the name of the Egyptian pharaoh, who is rendered as שִַׁישַַׁ ק in 1 Kgs 11:40; 2 Chr 12:2.5bis.7.9 and as שַׁוּשַַׁ ק in 1 Kgs 14:25, has been a debate in theology and egyptology for about two centuries. In this article, the vo-calized forms of the name available today are analyzed in chronological order, also considering the two spellings from 1 Kgs. Taking into account a sound change in the Egyptian langua…
אֶלְגָּבִישׁ
The article offers a discussion of a supposed new Egyptian loanword in the book of the prophet Ezekiel proposed by Jonathan Thambyrajah in 2021. The proposal that אֶלְגָּבִישׁ (Ez 13,11.13; 38,22) is a loanword from the Egyptian language can be firmly rejected due to many linguistic and cultural-historic problems
Ein neuer Textzeuge zu einem neunköpfigen Wesen (pBM EA 10669)
The present contribution is the editio princeps of pBM EA 10669, of which, despite its very interesting content, no notice has been taken thus far. The papyrus bears a text about a nine-headed figure with the main head in the form of a human being. Various passages inscribed on the papyrus can be paralleled directly with other texts from Egypt and thus offer an informative insight into the religious history of multi-headed beings, particularly du…

From Wng to Καιέχως – a Possible Explanation for the Cartouche Name KꜢ-kꜢ.w
So far, it has not been possible to equate the name KꜢ-kꜢ.w of the second king Horus Rꜥ-nb ( =i ) of the Second Dynasty, written in a cartouche during the Ramesside Period, with a name attested at the time of this dynasty. Taking into account the theory advanced by Jochem Kahl that Horus Rꜥ-nb ( =i ) is the same ruler as Wng , it is possible to develop a sequence in Hieratic script which leads from Wng to KꜢ-kꜢ.w and is based on a misreading of a…
Beiträge zum Wortschatz des Alten Testaments
The article examines the theory of Manfred Görg, who postulated two Egyptian loanwords in the Old Testament in 2003. By an inclusion of phonetic laws, sound changes and cultural-historical aspects, the theory that Liwyatan ( לִוְיַתַן ) and Nəhūštān ( נְחֻשְׁתָּן ) are Egyptian loanwords must be rejected

Wenn Archäologie und Philologie nicht harmonieren
The article compiles all in situ finds of magical bricks, which were placed in niches around the body inside the grave that are known so far. It is demonstrated that the text of the ritual described in the Book of the Dead spell 151 is not put to practice exactly as written. The archaeological evidence shows an entirely different approach by the ancient priests, who used the bricks in a more practical way rather than following the strict instruct…
Along with Sextus Julius Africanus only Pseudo-Eratosthenes conveys a list of the rulers of the fourth dynasty. Both lists are different, and didn’t match the common succession of this dynasty. The following article deals with both lists, their differences and similarities and in particular with the tradition of Pseudo-Eratosthenes. It is shown, after the reconstruction of the ancient sequential arrangement, that this list is a meticulous part of…

Erdwolf oder Schwein? Ein Vergleich von Archäologie und schriftlichem Material
The article lists the occurrences of the Egyptian word HDr , which so far has remained an enigmatic term for some kind of animal. Mainly on the basis of the analogies with other words, it is argued here that this animal is not an aardwolf but rather a pig or a wild boar. In support of this, a number of examples are cited from various Semitic languages of the Ancient Near East
