Step into another’s shoes
Teacher empathy, which is critical in meeting students’ diverse needs and backgrounds, has been commonly conceptualised with respect to cognitive and emotional capacity. Recognising the significance of an action dimension in empathy, this study aims to investigate how teachers who teach in culturally-diverse classrooms translate their understanding of, and emotional connection with, their students into altruistic actions. Participants included tw…
“Halfway Into the Pool”
Amidst political and educational challenges, LGBTQ+ educators in the Southern United States often conceal their identities. Through the lens of ecological systems theory, we propose that inconsistent pedagogical paradigms create a sense of liminality for these LGBTQ+ stakeholders. This study of four school personnel highlights the silencing of LGBTQ+ individuals in Southern United States schools, fear of parental backlash, and the cognitive burde…

The Wrong Tools for the Job
This case study investigates how teachers in a school with a large population of low-income students of color in the U.S. perceived students' cultural capital and associated teachers' roles. Twenty-seven teachers were interviewed and discussed four domains of cultural capital mismatch between students and teachers: behavioral, experiential, academic, and family norm. Teachers often characterized these misalignments as students' deficits and under…
Your Own Personal Illness
Some Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) members conceive of the fundamental problem they share as a "spiritual malady." Based on fieldwork among three AA groups in Nova Scotia, Canada, this article advances an ethnographic description of the concept. Through a close examination of how the spiritual malady was interpreted by my interlocutors, I propose that the concept creates a cultural framework for the articulation of subjectivities and the interpretati…
The Role of Trust
The purpose of this research is to examine teachers’ capacities and the role trust plays in the professional lives of teachers during the transition to a new team of three administrators in an elementary school located in a low-income urban community in the U.S. Twenty-seven teachers’ surveys and interviews showed that the transition caused some level of instability and uncertainty; however, teachers had a positive sense of efficacy, social capit…
A Meditation on Color and the Body in Derek Jarman's Chroma and Maggie Nelson's Bluets
Derek Jarman's Chroma and Maggie Nelson's Bluets are interdisciplinary autobiographical texts that explore the limits of articulacy and create new queer and feminist genealogies of meaning. This paper argues that these experimental projects communicate embodied experiences, including the effects of loss and AIDS-related illnesses, by interrogating our understandings of perception and color
Overachievement and coping strategies in adolescent males
How to assist young people to achieve to their potential is a universal concern of educators. The relationship between achievement above that expected on the basis of IQ alone (often referred to as overachievement) in school assessment and preferred coping style, as assessed by the Adolescent Coping Scale (ACS, Frydenberg & Lewis, 1993 a ), was investigated in a group of 374 boys in Grades 9, 10 and 11 at an independent boys’ school in metropolit…
