Akkadian Names in Aramaic Documents from Ancient Egypt
This is an onomastic study that follows on the footsteps of two previous studies—Persian names in Aramaic texts and Egyptian names in Aramaic texts. It distinguishes between theophorous names, hypocoristica, and profane names and compares the respective structure of the Akkadian and Hebrew names (e.g., the absence of three-component names in Hebrew). Tables show the frequency of fathers/sons with Akkadian names and sons/fathers with Akkadian, Egy…

Persia and Torah
Persia and Torah: The Theory of Imperial Authorization of Pentateuch, edited by James W. Watts. SBLSymS 17. Atlanta: Society of Biblical Literature, 2001. Pp. 228. $39.95 (paper). Peter Frei's theory of authorization of local legislation opened up to biblical scholars a fascinating line of inquiry with regard to origins of Pentateuch. Frei sought to demonstrate that phenomenon of imperial whereby legislation proposed by a local authority within e…

An Aramaic Joint Venture Agreement
A new collation and legal study of the oldest Aramaic papyrus contract disclose an instrument of agreement akin to the modern joint venture. On June 3, 515 B. C. E., Padi, son of Daganmelech, possibly a Philistine, contracted with an Egyptian farmer, Aḥa son of Apion, regarding Padi's royal allotment in Krb, probably Korobis in Middle Egypt. The terminology points to a sophisticated legal arrangement that goes beyond the standard tenant-farmer le…

A Life Estate of Usufruct
Between 420 and 402 B. C., Anani wrote for his daughter Jehoishma three deeds of bequest for the same property. The second (K 9) was to take effect upon his death and the third (K 10), immediately. Although the first (K 6) is fragmentary, there is no indication that it, too, was not to take effect immediately. If K 9 granted ownership and title, what did K 6 grant? The text has been newly collated and restored and special scribal features have be…

Two Aramaic Contracts without Dates
Forty-five Aramaic contracts or fragments from 5th-century B. C. Egypt testify to the presence of a date at the beginning of that century. Two of the contracts lack dates and endorsements (Cowley 11 and 49). Repeated examination of C 11 (Bodleian Library) has resulted in the relocation of ten fragments. Textually, this yields the name of the debtor ([Gema]rish ]b. A]ḥio; reduces the amount of the loan (31⁄2 shekels) and interest (7 ḥallurs per mo…

Ancestral estates” in Aramaic contracts
The two family archives from the Elephantine Jewish Community contain respectively four (C 5, 6, 8, 9) and six documents (K 3, 4, 6, 9, 10, 12) dealing with a single house each. One of the questions which arises is the occurrence, once in each of the archives (C 8:2; K 12:5), of the designation mhḥsn , translated either as “holding property” or as “military colonist”. Is the term of general meaning and its occurrence in each of the passages coinc…
