Features of Aramaeo-Canaanite
One of the sub-branches of Central Semitic, Northwest Semitic, contains a number of languages with no established hierarchical relation among them: Ugaritic, Aramaic, Canaanite, Deir Alla, and Samalian. Over the years, scholars have attempted to establish a more accurate sub-branching for Northwest Semitic or to suggest a different genetic affiliation for some languages, usually Ugaritic. In this paper, we will argue that Aramaic and Canaanite sh…
Sinai 357
Although Sinai 357 is one of the longest and best-preserved early alphabetic inscriptions from Serabit el-Khadem, these characteristics have not made it any easier to interpret. Most scholars read it as a command from a mining foreman to one of his subordinates, but this reading creates logical and contextual problems. To avoid these problems, I read Sinai 357 as a votive inscription to the Hurrian deity Teššob that employs language similar to fi…
Facts Matter
Although D. Petrovich's recent book The World's Oldest Alphabet: Hebrew as the Language of the Proto-Consonantal Script advances several claims about the origin of the alphabet and biblical history, its main arguments are linguistic. In particular, Petrovich identifies the language of the early alphabetic inscriptions as Hebrew as part of a larger argument for the historicity of the biblical Exodus tradition. In this review essay, I will summariz…

“Beloved of the Lady Are Those Who …”
This paper proposes a revised interpretation of the recurring sequence ḏ t b ṯ n m ṯ found in the early alphabetic inscriptions from Serabit el-Khadem, an Egyptian turquoise mining facility located in the Sinai Peninsula. I argue that this sequence combines with the well-known phrase m(ʾ)hb(b)ʿlt “beloved of the Lady” in Sinai 351, 353, 360, and 361 to form a memorial formula meaning “Beloved of the Lady are those who tell people about Māṯ.” It t…
Athtart
In this book, Aren M. Wilson-Wright proposes a new model for studying gods in the Ancient Near East. He then illustrates the utility of this model by applying it to a detailed study of the goddess Athtart at three Late Bronze Age sites: Egypt, Emar, and Ugarit.

Father, brother, and father-in-law as III-w nouns in Semitic
In this paper, I argue that the Semitic kinship terms *ʔab-'father', *ʔaḫ-'brother', and*ḥam-'father-in-law' originally ended in aw, which left traces in several of their forms. In the singular, thewcontracted with the case vowels leaving a distinctive pattern of short and long vowels in the unbound, bound, and suffixal forms. In the plural, thewwas retained in several languages due to the insertion of ana-vowel between the final two root consona…
Interpreting the Sinaitic Inscriptions in Context
This article argues that Sinai 345 is a dedicatory inscription produced by Semitic speakers during a joint Egyptian-Semitic mining expedition to Serabit el-Khadem. As such, it reflects both Egyptian and Northwest Semitic culture. It is written in an Egyptian influenced variety of Northwest Semitic, but uses a Northwest Semitic dedicatory formula.
