  • The Contribution of the Septuagint to the Masoretic Reading of צלמות

Marieke Dhont, Bärry Hartog•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für die Alttestamentlic…•2025

Interpretations of the Hebrew lexeme צלמות often revolve around the question whether it denotes an abstract noun (»darkness«) or a compound (»shadow of death«). We propose that the Septuagint played a key role in the development of the Masoretic reading of צלמות as צַלְמָוֶת . The frequent use of compounds in ancient Greek and the centrality of compounds in Greek etymology likely influenced the Septuagint’s reading of צלמות as a compound. This et…

  • Additional Evidence of Semantic and Syntactic Sensitivity in the Septuagint

Open Access•Tyler Horton, Andrew Keenan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Judaism•2023•References: 1

In this article, a tribute to James Aitken by his students and postdoctoral collaborator, several case studies are presented that demonstrate how situating the Septuagint within its Post-classical Greek context can add significantly to our understanding of the textual-linguistic character of the Septuagint translations. They include a new approach to understanding parataxis with καί in the Greek Pentateuch, morphology and word formation in relati…

This collection in part represents the proceedings of a one-day seminar held in Cambridge in April 2018, entitled "The Septuagint within the History of Greek," organized by James (Jim) Aitken. The invited speakers presented on various aspects of the language of the Septuagint: Trevor Evans on the syntax of the Septuagint, Will Ross on lexical choice, Jim Aitken on discourse markers, Patrick James on the influence of the language of the Septuagint …

  • The Septuagint within the History of Greek

Open Access•James K Aitken, Marieke Dhont•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Judaism•2023

The language of the Septuagint is not only a linguistic question: evaluations of the language have been intertwined with presuppositions on the social context of Jews in antiquity, in particular their linguistic competency, educational background, and position within the Graeco-Roman society. Recent work has rehabilitated the position of Jews in ancient society and with it came a renewed quest for understanding the social locus of the language of…

  • Syntax and Pronominal Competence in Post-Classical Greek and the Septuagint

Open Access•Marieke Dhont•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Judaism•2023

Scholars are often struck by the frequent use of pronouns in the Septuagint, particularly placed in postposition, linking both these aspects to the translation technique or the competency of the translators. In this article, I argue that pronominal usage in the Septuagint can be linked to developments in post-classical Greek more so than to interference from the source text. I focus particularly on pronominal usage in relation to syntax and word …

  • Intertext and allusion in Jewish-Greek literature

Open Access•Marieke Dhont•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of the…•2022

In the introduction to this special volume, Dhont reflects on Jewish literature in Greek as a research topic and contextualizes the primary research question that lies at the heart of the volume, namely, how did Greek-speaking Jews in the Hellenistic period navigate the multicultural encounter between Jewish and Greek traditions? The study of intertextuality and allusion provides a philological entry point into looking at the ways in which Jewish…

  • The Use of Greek in Palestine

    Open Access•Marieke Dhont•ARTICLE•Palestine Exploration Quarterly•2022•References: 3

Eupolemus, a Jewish historian generally dated to the second century bce, is often dismissed as a poor Greek writer. This lack of competency is linked to the assumptions that, as a Jew, he had limited Greek-language education and that he lived in Palestine, where Greek supposedly would have been marginal. The example of Eupolemus is illustrative of two issues in the study of Hellenistic Judaism. First, it calls into question the methods used for d…

  • A spring of living waters in a pool of metaphors

    Open Access•Marieke Dhont•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2021

This research article focuses on the use of the water metaphor in column 16 of the Hodayot. Previous scholarship has often concentrated on the garden metaphor in this section, particularly on its intertextual links with the book of Isaiah. By drawing on contemporary metaphor theory, in particular blending theory, I show how the author of the Hodayot creates poetry through a multiple blended network of garden and water metaphors, and how aspects o…

  • Greek education and cultural identity in Greek-speaking Judaism

Open Access•Marieke Dhont•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of the…•2020

The style of the Jewish-Greek historiographers Eupolemus and Demetrius has often been evaluated as “bad Greek.” This is generally seen as evidence of their lack of education. The negative views on the language of Demetrius and Eupolemus are illustrative of a broader issue in the study of Hellenistic Judaism: language usage has been a key element in the discussion on the societal position of Jews in the Hellenistic world. In this article, I assess…

  • Style and Context of Old Greek Job

Marieke Dhont•BOOK•Style and Context of Old Greek Job•2018

In Style and Context of Old Greek Job, Marieke Dhont offers a new understanding of the linguistic and stylistic diversity in the Septuagint corpus. To this end, the author innovatively uses Polysystem Theory, which has been developed in the field of modern literary studies. After discussing the appropriateness of a systemic approach to understanding Jewish-Greek literature, the author reflects on the Jewishness of Greek-language texts. Dhont then…
