Syntactic Priming Effects During the Comprehension of Passive Voice in Portuguese
Syntactic priming refers to the facilitation that occurs in the processing of a given complex syntactic structure when the speaker has been previously exposed to the same structure or to a similar one. Using a self-paced reading task, we investigate the effects of syntactic priming during the comprehension of passive sentences in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). Adult native speakers of BP read target passive sentences in primed and unprimed conditions…
When the present lies in the past
On the basis of corpus and experimental evidence, this paper claims that the ongoing process of change affecting the use and interpretation of the [Present under Past] pattern in subjunctive argument clauses in some Spanish varieties is sensitive to the syntactic/semantic type of the clause. The pattern deviates from Sequence-of-Tense grammar in not giving rise to double access effects. In the variety explored in this paper, this only happens in …
Code-switching em bilíngues talian-português sob uma abordagem psicolinguística
O presente estudo aborda o fenômeno de code-switching (CS) em falantes de uma língua minoritária a partir da psicolinguística. Uma tarefa de nomeação de figuras foi elaborada para tal. Esta tarefa continha uma condição bloqueada em que o participante deveria nomear as figuras utilizando a língua indicada por meio de uma bandeira e uma condição voluntária em que o participante era livre para nomear as figuras em talian ou português. Os resultados …
The Effect of Semantic and Discourse Features on the Use of Null and Overt Subjects - A Quantitative Study of Third Person Subjects in Brazilian Portuguese
In a corpus study and two acceptability experiments, we investigate whether semantic and discourse features of the antecedents affect the use of null and overt subjects in Brazilian Portuguese. Previous literature has proposed two hypotheses: the Hierarchy of Referentiality Hypothesis (Cyrino et al. 2000, inter alia) and the Semantic Gender Hypothesis (Creus & Menuzzi 2004, among others). We show that animacy and specificity affect the relative f…
