  • Problems in the measurement of cognitive deficits

    Loren J Chapman, Jean P Chapman•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1973•Cited by: 3

Several dozen studies of differential cognitive deficit appear each year. Artifacts cloud the findings in a majority of these studies because of differences in discriminating power of tasks coupled with generalized deficit of the patients. With two tests of differing reliability, the test with the higher reliability will yield greater performance deficit for the less able subjects. We argue for the advisability, in studies of differential cogniti…

  • Emotional Factors in Schizophrenic Deficit

    Open Access•Loren J Chapman•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1961

It may be hypothesized that schizophrenics are poorer on arithmetic items with social content than on items with non-social content, while normals show no difference. Social tasks that require the formation of social concepts, such as Heath's ( 1956) scrambled sentences, fail to distinguish disruption of performance by anxiety from poor prior learning of the social concepts. Arithmetic with social content clearly measures disruption by anxiety be…

  • Intrusion of associative responses into schizophrenic conceptual performance

    Loren J Chapman•ARTICLE•Journal of Abnormal & Social…•1958

Two traditionally opposed but not neces-sarily mutually exclusive explanationshave been advanced to explain schizo-phrenic thinking disorder and, particularly, to explain the concept-forming disturbance. The first explanation is that there is a primary loss of ability. The second is that there is what might be called an increased distractibility, i.e., an inappropriate utilization of distracting material which is connected in various ways to the …
