Temporal alignment of prosody and gesture in focus: Unimodal and multimodal hyperarticulation
This study investigates how the temporal alignment of prosody and gesture is affected by focus in German, examining both unimodal (prosodic) and multimodal (gesture-prosody) hyperarticulation. Specifically, we address two research questions: (i) does the realization of German falling pitch accents vary as a function of focus (versus background), and (ii) does gesture–prosody alignment vary as a function of focus? Drawing on Hypo- and Hyperarticul…
"An Introduction to the Special Issue "Syntax-Phonology Interface and Recursivity
The last decades have seen a renewed interest in the algorithms relating syntactic and prosodic structure since the ban on recursivity that had been prevalent in phonology for a long time was relaxed; see for instance Selkirk (2011) and Elfner (2012) for the Match constraints and Ito and Mester (2009, 2013) for the recursivity of the prosodic structure
Phrase-Level ATR Vowel Harmony in Anum-A Case of Recursive Prosodic Phrasing
1) Like many other Kwa languages, Anum employs a pattern of [ATR] vowel harmony that is regressive and [+ATR] dominant (RVH). This paper analyses RVH as a phrasal process which takes into account recursive phonological phrases. The proposal argues for an application of the process within and across non-maximal phonological phrases (φ) and a blocking of application across maximal phonological phrases (φmax). (2) Investigating RVH in Anum in more d…
Sequences of high tones across word boundaries in Tswana
The article analyses violations of the Obligatory Contour Principle (OCP) above the word level in Tswana, a Southern Bantu language, by investigating the realization of adjacent lexical high tones across word boundaries. The results show that across word boundaries downstep (i.e. a lowering of the second in a series of adjacent high tones) only takes place within a phonological phrase. A phonological phrase break blocks downstep, even when the ne…
Prosodic Prominence – A Cross-Linguistic Perspective
This paper is concerned with the contributions of signal-driven and expectation-driven mechanisms to a general understanding of the phenomenon of prosodic prominence from a cross-linguistic perspective. It serves as an introduction to the concept of prosodic prominence and discusses the eight papers in the Special Issue, which cover a genetically diverse range of languages. These include Djambarrpuyŋu (an Australian Pama-Nyungan language), Samoan…
Prosodic Encoding of Information Structure: A typological perspective
In many languages, prosody plays a key role in encoding information structure (IS). In general, focused elements are more prominent, while topical and given elements are less prominent. This chapter reviews evidence for prosodic cues to focus, topic, and givenness across a wide range of languages, in relation to a common IS framework. A typology is proposed of stress-based, phrase-based, and register-based focus-marking strategies. There are, how…
Production and perception of question prosody in Akan
The paper presents a production experiment investigating the phonetic parameters speakers employ to differentiate Yes-No questions from string-identical statements in Akan, a West-African two-tone Kwa language. Results show that, in comparison to the statement, speakers use a higher pitch register throughout the utterance as a global parameter, and falling f0, longer duration and higher intensity as local parameters on the final syllable of the Y…
Postfocal Downstep in German
This article is a follow-up study of Féry and Kügler (2008. Pitch accent scaling on given, new and focused constituents in German. Journal of Phonetics, 36, 680–703). It reports on an experiment of the F0 height of potential pitch accents in the postfocal region of German sentences and addresses in this way an aspect of the influence of information structure on the intonation of sentences that was left open in the previous article. The results of…
Phonological phrasing and ATR vowel harmony in Akan
This paper examines phonological phrasing in the Kwa language Akan. Regressive [+ATR] vowel harmony between words (RVH) serves as a hitherto unreported diagnostic of phonological phrasing. In this paper I discuss VP-internal and NP-internal structures, as well as SVO(O) and serial verb constructions. RVH is a general process in Akan grammar, although it is blocked in certain contexts. The analysis of phonological phrasing relies on universal synt…

Accentual preferences and predictability: An acceptability study on split intransitivity in German
On the Prosodic Expression of Pragmatic Prominence: The Case of Pitch Register Lowering in Akan
This article presents data from three production experiments investigating the prosodic means of encoding information structure in Akan, a tone language that belongs to the Kwa branch of the Niger-Congo family, spoken in Ghana. Information structure was elicited via context questions that put target words either in wide, informational, or corrective focus, or in one of the experiments also in pre-focal or post-focal position rendering it as given…

Was the knowledge of the second language or the age difference the determining factor
In a legal setting a witness may be asked to recognize a suspect based on a voice sample alone. Previous research has shown that knowledge of a language has an effect on an individual’s ability to identify speakers. Recent research using a set of voice line-ups has demonstrated that there was no unambiguous improvement in the ability to recognize and identify speakers during the four years of BA (hons) Swedish study by British university students…
