The Categories of Perpetrator and Victim in Transitional Justice: An Analysis of the Argentinian Dictatorship as a ‘Restless Event’
International human rights law constructs the perpetrator-victim binary as a legal formulation of a relationship created by acts of violence. During transition, victims demand justice for the mass crimes committed by perpetrators against them. Yet, as the case of Argentina demonstrates, this binary is not a stable endpoint but a site of perpetual political contestation. This article argues that the Argentine dictatorship (1976-1983) operates as a…
A Tale of Dual Cities: The Urban Miracle and Humanitarian Crisis Maps of Medellín (2002-2015)
This article explores the humanitarian optics of urban securitization in Latin American cities that are characterized by very high rates of homicide and urban violence. In response to this situation, an urban security model has emerged aimed at reducing crime, managing citizens’ fear and promoting urban development and social inclusion. The key vectors of this model are urban development, citizen security and securitization. This article explores…

Lumbar ontogenetic growth and sexual dimorphism in modern humans
To detect and differentiate between possible heterochronic processes in the ontogenetic growth pattern of the human lumbar region, in relationship with sexual dimorphism. We measured the growth trajectories of average length and width, length/width ratio, posterior projected surface area, and bone mineral density using dual energy X‐ray absorptiometry, in a sample group of 1718 modern humans. These growth patterns were analyzed using the Gompertz…
Human Rights Politics and Injustice: Transitional Justice in Argentina and South Africa
Transitional justice is about the recovery of the rule of law and justice after mass violence. In the recent history of Argentina and South Africa, human rights politics have played an important role in the transition from repression to democracy as a discourse of resistance to state repression and as a framework and methodology for the successor state to manage demands for justice and promote reconciliation. Post-transition, they have provided a…
Human Rights, Victimhood, and Impunity: An Anthropology of Democracy in Argentina
This article explores human rights politics in the transition from dictatorship to democracy in Argentina. Its ethnographic focus is the phenomenon of families of victims associations, usually led by mothers, that first emerged to protest against mass disappearance under the military dictatorship. Democracy has also produced new families of victims associations protesting against different forms of state abuse and/or neglect. They represent one f…
Mujeres de mucha monta: Women expressing their erotic desires
The collection of short stories analysed here may not become a classic in Latin American literature; but it has certainly caused great upheaval within the Uruguayan context. 1 I am presently writing an article entitled ‘Scandal in Montevideo: Uruguayan Women Write Their Desire’, which recounts the social impact of this event through interviews with contributing authors. Uruguayan women's literature has had a well known precedent of erotic express…
The question of ‘Argentinidad’: The self‐image of Arab and Jewish ancestry in recent Argentine literature
This contribution explores what remains of the different ethnic groups that helped form the Argentine national identity, and the extent to which they have enlightened or blurred the process of creating this controversial ‘argentinidad’. To this effect it looks at two such ethnic groups – Arabs and Jews – and tries to elucidate through the latest writings of two Argentine authors the Arab and Jewish community's still unresolved identity as ‘new Ar…
