Factor Analytic Study of Irrational Beliefs
This study investigated the validity of the Rational-Emotive Therapy construct of irrational beliefs and provided discriminant validity for a test of irrational beliefs, the Idea Inventory. 216 male psychiatric inpatients from a large medical center were administered a battery of psychological measures. These included the Idea Inventory, the MMPI, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Hooper Visual Organization Test, and the Shipley Institute of Liv…
Comparison among Four Measures of Depression in Younger and Older Alcoholics
Two hypotheses were tested: (1) The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) would be less affected by age in an older alcoholic group than in a younger one. (2) In comparison with other depression scales—Beck Depression Inventory, Depression Scale of MMPI, and Dysthymic Scale of Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory—the Geriatric Depression Scale would be the one least affected by age in the older group. To test these hypotheses two groups were formed, c…
Defensiveness in Psychiatric Elderly Persons
It is popularly believed that as one ages defensiveness increases and becomes a stable aging trait. 44 psychiatric inpatients were divided into younger and older groups. Standard measures of defensiveness from psychological tests were used; Q and K scales of the MMPI, and the F% of the Rorschach. Intelligence was controlled. Results indicate that there are no differences between the younger and older groups. Among psychiatric elderly inpatients d…
Rorschach Experience Balance, Introversion, and Sex
Three specific hypotheses concerning Rorschach experience balance of 81 psychiatric patients were tested: (1) Subjects showing M > sum C (introversives) would be higher on Si of the MMPI than subjects showing M sum C would be higher on Si of the MMPI than subjects showing M < sum C. (3) Males and females would show different experience balance types. In Study 1, 16 introversives were compared with 16 extratensives for their scores on Si and Sc, b…
Rorschach Card Rejection and its Relationships to Defensiveness, Intelligence, and Sex
This study attempted to replicate several earlier findings concerning the relationships of Rorschach card rejection to intelligence, defensiveness, and sex. The subjects were 27 males and 48 females who were inpatients at an acute treatment, psychiatric hospital, and who had been tested with the Rorschach, MMPI, and WAIS. The measures of defensiveness were the Q and K scales of the MMPI and F% from the Rorschach. The subjects were divided into re…
Use of Psychological Tests in Differential Diagnosis
The problem of differential diagnosis by means of psychological tests has continuously engaged the efforts of clinical psychologists, although the results produced have not been consistent. This study sought to determine whether quantitative scores of the MMPI, Rorschach, and the Sixteen Personality Factor Test (16 PF) differentiate psychotic from neurotic outpatients. Ss were 25 psychotics and 38 neurotics, all of whom were male veterans receivi…
