Tap, Move, or Dance? How Groove Ratings Differ Across Movement Descriptors
Groove, defined as the pleasurable urge to move to music, is affected by properties of the music as well as factors that differ among individuals, such as music training. Ratings of the desire to produce movement (e.g., tapping and dancing) have been used to quantify groove, but we do not know whether the specific type of movement that is rated affects scores. Further, few studies have considered the effect of dance training on groove perception.…
Commonality and variation in mental representations of music revealed by a cross-cultural comparison of rhythm priors in 15 countries
Music is present in every known society but varies from place to place. What, if anything, is universal to music cognition? We measured a signature of mental representations of rhythm in 39 participant groups in 15 countries, spanning urban societies and Indigenous populations. Listeners reproduced random ‘seed’ rhythms; their reproductions were fed back as the stimulus (as in the game of ‘telephone’), such that their biases (the prior) could be …

Beat Perception and Production in Musicians and Dancers
The ability to perceive and produce a beat is believed to be universal in humans, but individual ability varies. The current study examined four factors that may influence beat perception and production capacity: 1) expertise: music or dance, 2) training style: percussive or nonpercussive, 3) stimulus modality: auditory or visual, and 4) movement type: finger-tap or whole-body bounce. Experiment 1 examined how expertise and training style influen…
Embracing Anti-Racist Practices in the Music Perception and Cognition Community
This past summer, the police killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery in the United States led to public outcry and international protests in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, and broader awareness of the effects of systemic racism. Following these events, many organizations have reflected critically on how they participate in practices that marginalize underrepresented members of their community. The Society for Musi…
Tuning the brain to musical delight
Neuroscientific Investigations of Musical Rhythm
Neuroscientific research into music has increased noticeably over the last two decades, but how (or if) the findings have improved our understanding of music is debatable. This question is considered in this article, which first describes advances in neuroimaging techniques, and then reviews findings from research in the neuroscience of music (with a focus on rhythm and meter). Some of the difficulties encountered by researchers are highlighted, …
