Joint Effect of Amobarbital and Response Prevention on Car Extinction
The purpose of this study was to extend previous findings of enhanced CAR extinction with response prevention by demonstrating that extinction may be further facilitated by amobarbital treatment during response prevention. Ss administered amobarbital during CAR prevention did not differ significantly from the control Ss in extinction performance. Extinction was not facilitated by amobarbital when administered during CAR prevention
Effects of Amobarbital, Chlordiazepoxide, and Chlorpromazine Administered following Shock Trauma
Amobarbiral (30 mg/kg), Chlordiazepoxide (30 mg/kg), and Chlorpromazine (4 mg/kg) had no evident retroactive effects in the present study. These drugs administered immediately following shock trauma did not predispose Ss to react less fearfully on a later encounter with the same situation
Multiple Factors Affecting Volitional Consumption of Alcohol in the Abrams Wistar Rat
Alcohol preference of rats was studied using a multiple-factor design. Fifty-six male and female Wistar albino rats, divided into experimental and control groups, were used. The ratio of the intake of a 10% solution of ethanol to total fluid was measured in the two groups under five experimental conditions: initial preference (a 14-day free-choice situation), stress (an 8 day freechoice situation during which the experimental rats were removed fr…
Effect of Amobarbital Administered at Various Stages of Avoidance Response Acquisition
In order to study the effects of amobarbital at various stages during avoidance acquisition, rats were injected with 20 mg/kg of the drug or with a placebo at the beginning of training or after four or eight days of training. As in previous studies, amobarbital facilitated CAR emission when given from the beginning of training. However, injections of the same drug at the same dosage level had no demonstrable effect on CAR emission after either fo…
CS Intensity, Amobarbital Sodium and the Conditioned Avoidance Response
In studying the relationship between level of CS intensity (light) and drug condition (amobarbital sodium) in the acquisition of the conditioned avoidance response of the white rat in a jump-box task, data showed that both variables influenced avoidance performance. Although the over-all performance of drugged Ss was better than that of those given a placebo, primary differences occurred at 50,000 and 800,000 peak candles of CS intensity; perform…
Selective Review of Effects of Discontinuation of Drug Treatment
The research literature on the effects of discontinuation of drug treatment is reviewed. The implications and problems generated by the increasing body of evidence that the therapeutic effects of ataractic drugs do not transfer to the nondrug state are considered. Effort is also made to elucidate some of the problems which negative effects of drug withdrawal create for drug therapy. Directions are suggested for further research that should lead t…

Failure to Find Improved Shuttle-Box Avoidance Performance Using d-Amphetamine Sulfate
Effects of Amobarbital Sodium and Meprobamate on Acquisition of Conditioned Avoidance
The purpose of these experiments was to study the effects of two “fear-reducing” drugs, amobarbital sodium and meprobamate, on the acquisition of a conditioned avoidance response in albino rats, and how this response is related to general activity level and freezing behavior. Both drugs facilitated acquisition of the avoidance response and increased activity level as measured by the number of spontaneous inter-trial hurdle crossings. Thus, these …
