Effects of Psychological Distance on Mental Abstraction
Construal-level theory (CLT) proposes that psychological distance influences the level of abstraction at which something is mentally construed: Things perceived as less probable (likelihood) or further away from the here (spatial distance), now (temporal distance), or self (social distance) are thought about more abstractly. In this international multilab study, we tested four basic hypotheses derived from core assumptions of CLT and explore pote…

Consumers’ choices of whom to follow on digital platforms shape their informational landscape. In an era in which the credibility of informational sources is critical, this research examines two key questions: (1) When do consumers prioritize communicator credibility over likability in their decisions to follow? and (2) How do multiple credibility and likability cues interact to influence these decisions? Analyzing four large datasets from popula…
Predicting a win by a small margin
The public display of election poll results is often manipulated to influence voter predictions about the race. Narrow scaling is one such manipulation that involves truncating the chart's vertical axis such that its range extends closely around the values of the bars. This manipulation exacerbates the visual difference between bars, making the margin appear larger than an unbiased representation would suggest. The current research examines wheth…
The rock musical and the beginnings of rock music in Israel in the early 70s
This article uncovers an untold story of how rock music came to the big stages and national broadcasting studios of a country transitioning from the European sphere and a socialist ethos to the American sphere and a market-oriented culture. In demonstrating how the rock musical preceded, anticipated, and likely enabled rock music in Israel, this article will focus on five rock musicals from the early 1970s. We argue that the rock musical introduc…
The Old and the New Israel
Understandings of the new American nation as a “Second Israel,” and a prevalent political discourse devoted to the narratives of the Old Testament, were a distinct trait of the early United States. Indeed, the images and narratives of the Old Testament were as common in the formative decades of the United States, in the words of the great historian Perry Miller, as “the air that the people breathed.” This attachment to the Old Testament, and the …
This Natural Defect of Apprehension
In the years following the creation of the United States citizens of the young republic conducted a vigorous debate on Indigenous history, or rather on indigens and history. Some of the commentators who wrote about Native Americans during the long Federal Decade (1787-1800) acknowledged that they had a history and that indigenous traditions were helpful in tracing it; in their view Natives were people of and in history. Another significant group …
Seth Perry. Bible Culture and Authority in the Early United States
Bible Culture and Authority in the Early United States is a nuanced and eye-opening study about the ways in which the Bible has functioned in early America. While historians tend to describe the Bible as providing, and operating as, a source of authority, few have observed and analyzed how exactly that authority manifested itself. Seth Perry now offers an intriguing answer to that question: the early American Bible was not a “source” of and for a…
Our Federal Sun
Old Regime political cultures made use of extraordinary anthropomorphic readings of the sun, which by the late seventeenth century had won over the earth in contemporaries’ minds as the center of the solar system. In such understandings the sun constituted the center of a planetary “system,” which attracted, repelled, and presumably controlled lesser bodies. Accordingly, by striving for the celestial harmony that the British imperial constitution…
Father of Liberty
Students of revolutionary America might know of Dr. Jonathan Mayhew through the Liberty Fund anthology Political Sermons of the American Founding Era, 1730–1805 (edited by Ellis Sandoz, 1991, vol. 1), in which his 1766 sermon, “The Snare Broken,” is prominent. Wondering why the pastor did not follow up on that harsh damnation of the Stamp Act (1765) they will find out (perhaps through a modest Wikipedia entry) that he died in the same year as the…

Influence via Comparison-Driven Self-Evaluation and Restoration
Ample research shows that consumers accept influence from a source they identify with and reject influence from a source they wish to dissociate from. The current article moves beyond the well-established identification principle and delineates a new influence process. Influence via comparison-driven self-evaluation and restoration (CDSER) takes place when one observes a counterstereotypical product user and, as a result, questions one's relative…
Written in the Style of Antiquity
Students of early America have overlooked the fact that Americans published numerous pseudo-biblical texts, a practice that peaked from approximately 1770 to 1830. This unique and forgotten tradition of writing "in the style of antiquity" was the product of an age still suffused with the Bible yet at the same time Enlightened as to the liberal use of that book's language, notably for political issues across the ideological spectrum. Employing the…
A Perfect Republic”
Between the United States' declaration of independence and the country's attempt to construct a federal Constitution, a group of New England ministers proclaimed Israel's biblical history an exemplum for their republican and federal aspirations. Tracing this unique interpretive discourse, the essay underscores the importance of political Hebraism to the intellectual history of the early United States
The missing revolution
During much of his prolific career, the late historian Jacob Talmon was preoccupied with revolutionary movements, and was especially unsettled by, and attracted to, the force displayed by the French and Russian Revolutions. The young United States' long and bloody war against the British Empire, followed by the creation of a republican novus ordo seclorum, supposedly fitted Talmon's revolutionary model and narrative. Hence, it is hard to account …
